About Madrid
Madrid may be the capital of Spain today, but that hasn’t always been the case. Much like your upcoming trip, King Philip II moved his court from Toledo to Madrid and sparked controversial debates at the time over what a capital is supposed to be for a nation.
Madrid vs. the coast
Madrid has been the capital of Spain since the 16th century, but King Philip II’s decision surprised many at the time. Madrid was not as big, connected, or developed as the cities on the coast. One reason to put the capital inland was to create a neutral political zone that did not favor one coastal city over another. Spain’s coastal cities were also preoccupied with their own trade and colonization into the Americas, Africa, and Europe, leaving little time for domestic affairs.
### Madrid vs. Toledo
For contemporaries, Toledo was the obvious choice for a permanent inland capital, however, King Philip II wanted less Catholic influence. At the time, Toledo was the center of Catholic leadership in Spain. It is also nestled in the crook of the Tajo River, which makes expansion difficult. For a growing empire, Spain would need a capital that could spread out into the surrounding flatlands.
### Madrid today
Warm, sunny Spain has never had a problem attracting visitors. 3.2 million people call Madrid home and it is a popular destination for digital nomads, foreign students, and 5 million travelers a year. People come to see its many world-class museums, Moorish architecture, and to eat the best food from all the regions of Spain.

Daytrip has your Toledo to Madrid transfer covered, but now you need to hammer out the details. When packing your bags, keep these travel tips in mind.
Bring earplugs for a good night’s sleep
The afternoon siesta might be a time of peace and quiet, but nights in Madrid are another story! Madrid is a popular party destination with lively nightlife. Downtown accommodation is convenient for walking short distances to popular attractions, but it's also where the party's at. Bring earplugs to help you sleep, especially if you sleep with the windows open during summer.
### Protect your skin from the sun
Spain’s eternal sunshine is inviting, but it can damage your skin. If you are visiting the Carranque Archaeological Park, apply sunscreen frequently, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and carry water.

Things to do when you get to Madrid
When you arrive in Madrid, the vibrant capital of Spain, there's an array of exciting activities and attractions waiting for you. Whether you've returned to Madrid from Toledo after a day trip or it’s your first time in the city, it promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Admire the greats at Madrid’s art galleries and museums
What Madrid lacks in a coastline, it makes up for in culture! Madrid has many art galleries and museums showcasing both local and international art. These are solid options for getting out of the sun for a few hours and basking in the best Spanish art instead.
A must-visit during your time in Madrid is The Prado Museum. It is Spain’s national art museum and it houses centuries of European masterpieces by artists such as Goya, El Greco, Bosch, and Velazquez.
The Reina Sofía Museum has contemporary and modern art with pieces by Dali and Miro, some of Spain’s most famous artists. You can also study Picasso’s “Guernica,” his portrayal of the Spanish Civil War.
If large galleries leave you overwhelmed, step inside the Sorolla Museum. This intimate gallery is in the home and studio of Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923), a Spanish painter known for his luminous art style of Mediterranean landscapes and seaside scenes.
After perfecting your skills as an art critic, travel through the evolution of Spain’s history from prehistoric times to the 19th century at the National Archaeological Museum.
### Visit Ancient Egypt at Madrid’s Temple of Debod
Did you know an entire ancient Egyptian temple was dismantled and reassembled brick-by-brick in Madrid's Parque del Oest? The Temple of Debod was gifted to Spain by Egypt in 1968 as thanks for Spain's help in saving the temples of Abu Simbel. This temple from the 2nd century BC features well-preserved reliefs and offers stunning views at sunset.
When is the best time to visit Madrid
In general, spring and fall are the best times to visit Madrid. Instead of braving temperatures of 89° F in July, you can enjoy exploring the city in the high 60s-70s. Plus, outside of certain holidays, there are fewer tourists and hotels are often a bit cheaper!
Timing your visit around the Catholic calendar is the best way to see Madrid looking its best! As a devout Catholic country, the week before Easter (Semana Santa, or Holy Week) is a festive time with religious processions, elaborate decorations, and outdoor markets with traditional foods and gifts.
Similarly, November 1st is Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints Day). Spaniards clean and decorate the cemeteries, altars, and churches in honor of the dead until the florists run out of flowers to sell.

“I used this service for a transfer from Split in Croatia to Perast Montenegro. My experience was exceptional. My driver Bojan was helpful, informative and ensured my journey was comfortable and enjoyable. I highly recommend the service.”
“We were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, we’d especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.”

“We absolutely love this company and have used it many times over the years to get from A to B without the hassle of hiring a car ourselves. Excellent drivers every time. Efficient and professional. It’s worth every penny and we can honestly recommend Day Trip to everyone. It’s 5 star rating is well deserved.”
“We traveled from Nuremberg to Munich in a beautiful Audi. Driver picked us at our hotel at the exact time requested. Got us to Munich in plenty of time for our next tour. Driver made sure we were comfortable”
“Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.”
“We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.”
“Used the service to go from Luxor to Hurghada, Egypt. Ahmed H was our driver and he was perfect. The car was new, clean, he had water and snacks for us, and accommodated our stops. Great service from him and would recommend it.”
“Used Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.”
“I was hesitant to use this service while abroad because it's not one I'm familiar with in the U.S. But, after reading the reviews, I decided to use it to book a trip from Toledo to the Madrid airport. My family and I needed to be at the airport on time in order to catch flights to various destinations. I am happy to say that the service was just as described. The service communicated with me after a rescheduling of my initial driver. They provided all the contact information. The driver, Pelayo, showed up on time. He was very nice, polite and friendly. He drove us safely to the airport within the time expected. I will definitely use this service in the future when I travel abroad.”
“Our experience with daytrip was excellent. Our driver was very nice, he was on time and was very courteous. Overall, our experience was extremely positive and I would certainly recommend this to our friends.
