Overview: car trip from Frankfurt to Amsterdam
Amsterdam is far from being overrated, and that's not due to a lack of visitors. In fact, itâs one of the most visited cities in the world, and for all the right reasons. Amsterdam has plenty to offer, from diverse museums and the tulip festival to canal cruises, cycling paths, and a vibrant nightlife for every taste. Make sure your car trip from Frankfurt to Amsterdam is equally enriching by exploring along the way.
With a private car service like Daytrip, your journey from Frankfurt to Amsterdam becomes more than just a transfer, as you are given the flexibility to explore any sightseeing stops along the way. Some of the stops you cannot miss are Cologne which had most of its territory destroyed during WWII, Huis Bergh Castle which is one of the oldest Dutch castles, and the charming town of Utrecht.
About Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a cosmopolitan city famous for its modern and liberal values. It is known as the "Venice of the North," not only because it has more than 100 canals. In fact, Amsterdam has four times more bridges than Venice! Torensluis Bridge, built in 1648, is the oldest bridge in Amsterdam. Some of the most famous bridges in the city also include Magere Brug, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht.
The floating city of Amsterdam is built on soft clay soil and 11 million wooden poles that support the city from sinking. However, the modern constructions are built either on concrete or steel poles. While there are currently no concerns about Amsterdam sinking and the situation is under control, preventive measures are still being taken.
Amsterdam is the ideal destination for those who want to move around in a more active way. Funnily, there are way more bikes in Amsterdam than the actual residents, so you wonât have to worry about finding a place to rent a bike.
The capital of the Netherlands is also recognized by the views of its canals, allowing you to not only explore the city on foot or bicycle but also by boat, so it is also the perfect destination for a romantic sightseeing cruise. As you slowly navigate through the canales (combined they are over 62 miles/100 km long!), you will be gifted with some truly scenic views of the city from a different perspective.
While these are just some of the things that characterize Amsterdam, the atmosphere alone is a good enough reason to visit this charming destination. Whether you are planning to explore the main landmarks by bike, go on a cruise in the canal, or observe the city from one of its many cafes (make sure you read our travel tips regarding this), you will surely find something that suits your wanderlust.
From Frankfurt to Amsterdam: travel tips
Before you start your journey from Frankfurt to Amsterdam, check out these travel tips that will save you from trouble:
No jumping off the bridges
If you're traveling in summer, it might feel tempting to jump into the canal for a swim. However, it's important to know that swimming in the canals is not permitted due to safety reasons. If you jump off one of the countless bridges, you will be fined around $150 (âŹ140).
Local coffee shop culture
In Amsterdam, there are two types of coffee shops. The ones that are meant for sipping coffee alongside a sweet pastry (we recommend the traditional appeltaart), are known as âkoffiehuisâ, whereas if you see a sign in English saying âCoffee House,â you will enter a place where cannabis is being sold. While it is not legal in the Netherlands, it is, letâs say, tolerated. Taking photos is usually prohibited in coffee shops to respect the privacy of both customers and staff.
Amsterdam is not cheap
If you are looking for a cheap weekend getaway, Amsterdam may not be the best destination. While you can avoid higher prices by booking everything in advance, most things will still be more expensive than on average, compared to other cities in Europe.
How to get from Frankfurt to Amsterdam

Buses for this route depart several times a day.
From Frankfurt to Amsterdam by train

To book a high-speed train ticket, look for Intercity Express (ICE) trains. These trains can run at a speed of up to 130 to 186 mi/h (230 to 300 km/h), so the journey time of direct routes is usually around 5 to 6 hours and 20 minutes. The tickets for direct high-speed trains cost around $135 (âŹ125).
From Frankfurt to Amsterdam by plane
If you are planning to catch a flight, then you can opt for one of the flights operated by KLM or Lufthansa. The duration of a direct flight from Frankfurt to Amsterdam is around 1 hour and 10 minutes. And while by booking in advance you can find tickets for around $105 (âŹ97), you have to keep in mind that you have to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours in advance, as well as factor in at least 1 hour to get to and from the airport (both in Frankfurt and Amsterdam). In total, you will likely spend around 4 to 5 hours traveling by air.
From Frankfurt to Amsterdam by river cruise
If you are seeking a more luxurious travel option, taking a river cruise is what you are looking for! You will navigate through the Rhine River for several days, depending on the cruise you opt for. The river cruises from Frankfurt to Amsterdam often include stops at other ports for you to explore nearby cities.
From Frankfurt to Amsterdam by private car service
If making stops along the way to explore nearby cities sounds appealing, but you are not planning to take a river cruise, then opt for a private car service like Daytrip! Your flexibility is our priority, so make sure you add any of the sightseeing stops to your journey. You can schedule your trip for any time of the day. During the 4 hour and 40 minutes long drive your local driver will be happy to share more tips and recommendations, as you approach the cosmopolitan Amsterdam.
Before you cross the border, stretch your legs and take a walk around the charming town of Cologne. Make sure you check out the impressive, UNESCO-listed Cologne Cathedral built in Gothic style. Not far away from Cologne, make another stop at the Schloss Benrath and have a little stroll at the palaceâs lovely park. Then, as you enter the Netherlands, explore the city of Utrecht and the nearby De Haar Castle which is the largest castle in the country.
Things to do when you get to Amsterdam
When it comes to Amsterdam, it really is hard to pick just a few things to add to your itinerary. However, we did the job for you by picking some of our favorite things that we think you will also enjoy. Keep on reading!
Explore the cityâs countless museums
Amsterdam is one of the cities with the most museums, so you will surely find something that suits your interests. You can visit the Anne Frank House to learn more about her heart-wrenching story or appreciate the artwork of the famous painter at the Van Gogh Museum, which houses around 200 paintings, including the famous âSunflower.â If you are interested in science, you can even visit the only museum in the world dedicated to microorganisms. There truly is no shortage of choices!
Walk around the Jordaan District
If you want to escape the loud city center, experience more of the local vibe, and admire the picturesque canals and historic buildings, then consider visiting the Jordaan District. It is one of Amsterdamâs most emblematic neighborhoods, built back in the 17th century. In this area, you will also find many nice restaurants and interesting stores as you weave through the narrow streets lined with typical Dutch houses.
Dive into the tulip garden
Did you know that Amsterdam has the only floating flower market in the world? If the flowers of the market are not enough and you are visiting during the tulip season (mid-April to mid-May), you must add the Keukenhof Gardens to your itinerary!
It is a beautiful garden that displays tulips of all the colors and types. As the Netherlands is famous for its tulips, make sure you go early to avoid crowds: a great way to do so is by securing Daytripâs private car service. You will be there before anyone else and (possibly) have the garden all for yourself!
Try the Dutch culinary delights
One of the most exciting parts of visiting another country is trying their local dishes and pastries. Here are some of our favorites that you should not miss:
- Stroopwafel: these thin waffles are filled with a thin layer of syrup. It is a simple yet very Dutch little sweet treat to enjoy as a quick snack.
- Snert: while the name might not sound appealing, it really is worth a try! It is a thick soup made of peas, pork, carrots, and herbs such as leek and celery.
- Bitterballen: little meatballs that are perfect for snacking as you enjoy a pint of Heineken.
When is the best time to visit Amsterdam
The best time to explore the capital of the Netherlands is from spring to fall (mid-March to September), as there are more daylight hours and the temperatures are much more pleasant than during the winter months. If you want to visit during the tulip season, the ideal time is from mid-April to the first weeks of May.
If you're not particularly interested in tulip season and prefer to explore the city without the crowds, consider visiting in September or even October. This way, you can enjoy a more relaxed experience with fewer tourists.

Mon expĂ©rience a Ă©tĂ© exceptionnelle.
