Overview: car trip from Lisbon Airport to Porto

The Lisbon Airport to Porto transfer takes around 2 hours and 50 minutes, covering a distance of 190 miles (or 305 km). By choosing a Daytrip private transfer, you can turn the journey into an exciting sightseeing tour with optional stops along the way.

Taking a drive from Lisbon Airport to Porto gives you the freedom to explore some of Portugal's most fascinating sites that most travelers miss when taking trains or buses. The trip offers stunning views of Portugal's diverse landscapes, from rolling hills to coastal panoramas as you travel north.

For instance, consider a stop at Óbidos, a charming medieval walled town that will transport you back in time with its narrow cobblestone streets and traditional whitewashed houses. Or visit the magnificent Monastery of Batalha, a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing stunning Gothic architecture that took over a century to build.

Those who appreciate the ocean can add a visit to Nazaré, famous for its record-breaking waves and traditional fishing culture. Daytrip's door-to-door service ensures your travel day becomes part of your vacation experience rather than just a means to get from point A to point B.

About Porto

After your journey from Lisbon Airport to Porto, you'll find yourself in Portugal's second-largest city, a place where history and modernity blend seamlessly along the banks of the Douro River. Porto, often called the "Invicta" (undefeated), has a rich history dating back to Roman times, with a historic center that earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996.

The city's resilient character has been shaped by centuries of trade, most notably for its world-famous port wine that has been exported globally since the 17th century. The wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from Porto's Ribeira district, offer visitors a chance to learn about and taste this fortified wine that takes its name from the city itself. A visit to one of the many port wine lodges provides insight into the production process and the opportunity to sample different varieties.

Porto's architectural heritage showcases an impressive variety of styles, from Romanesque to Baroque and contemporary. The imposing Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto), dating back to the 12th century, offers panoramic views of the city's red-tiled rooftops. The Clérigos Tower, designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, stands as one of Porto's most recognizable landmarks at 249 feet (76 meters) tall.

The city's relationship with the Douro River is central to its identity. Six bridges span the river, connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, with the iconic Dom LuĂs I Bridge being the most famous. Designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, this double-deck metal arch bridge provides breathtaking views of both banks of the river.

In recent years, Porto has experienced a renaissance as a travel destination, with its authentic atmosphere, exceptional cuisine, and vibrant cultural scene attracting visitors from around the world. The city strikes a balance between its industrial heritage and a creative spirit, as evident in its thriving arts scene, innovative restaurants, and boutique shops.

From Lisbon Airport to Porto: travel tips

Make your Lisbon Airport to Porto transfer more enjoyable and efficient with these essential travel tips that will help you maximize your travel day.

Add a sightseeing stop to your journey

The direct drive from Lisbon Airport to Porto takes about 3 hours, but adding a sightseeing stop transforms your travel day into an adventure. Consider visiting FĂĄtima, one of the world's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites. Here, you can explore the Sanctuary and learn about the famous Marian apparitions. Your Daytrip driver will wait while you explore, eliminating the stress of parking or catching public transportation to these locations.

Book your transfer in advance

During high season (June to September), transportation options between Lisbon and Porto can fill up quickly. Booking your private transfer in advance ensures availability on your preferred travel date and gives you time to plan any sightseeing stops you'd like to include. This is especially important if you're traveling directly from Lisbon Airport after an international flight, as you'll have peace of mind knowing your transportation is secured.

How to get from Lisbon Airport to Porto

There are several options for your Lisbon Airport to Porto transfer, each with its own advantages. Here's a breakdown of the main transportation methods, from most to least convenient.

Private transfer from Lisbon Airport to Porto

The simplest and most comfortable way to get from Lisbon Airport to Porto is with a Daytrip private car service. This direct private transfer will get you to Porto in approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes without any hassle. Your journey begins right at the airport arrival terminal and ends at your accommodation in Porto, making it the most convenient door-to-door option.

You'll travel with one of our friendly, professional local drivers who will ensure your comfort and safety throughout the journey. Unlike with public transportation, you'll be able to explore sightseeing stops along the way and adjust your schedule as needed. The trip offers excellent value for families or small groups to travel together in a clean, comfortable, and luxurious vehicle.

Trains from Lisbon Airport to Porto

Taking the train is another popular option, but requires first getting from Lisbon Airport to a train station. The high-speed Alfa Pendular trains operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP) connect Lisbon's Oriente Station to Porto's CampanhĂŁ Station in about 2 hours and 40 minutes. To reach Oriente Station from the airport, you'll need to take the metro (about 5-10 minutes), adding to your overall travel time.

Train tickets typically range from $25 to $50 (€23 to €46) depending on the class and how far in advance you book. The train timetable offers multiple departures throughout the day, with the first train usually leaving around 6:00 AM and the last one around 9:30 PM. Remember that you'll also need local transportation at both ends to get from/to your accommodations.

Bus from Lisbon Airport to Porto

The bus is the most budget-friendly option, with companies like Rede Expressos offering direct services from Lisbon's Oriente Bus Station to Porto for around $15-25 (€14-23). However, like with trains, you'll first need to get from the airport to the bus station. The journey by bus takes approximately 3.5 hours, not including the time needed to travel between the airport and the bus station.

Buses offer a comfortable ride with amenities like Wi-Fi and air conditioning, but they don't provide the flexibility to stop at points of interest along the way. The bus timetable typically includes multiple daily departures, with reduced frequency on weekends and holidays.

Car rental for the Lisbon Airport to Porto drive

Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, but comes with the responsibilities of navigating, parking, and dealing with traffic in unfamiliar cities. Rental cars typically start at around $30-50 per day plus fuel costs and toll fees, which can be significant on Portuguese highways.

While a rental car offers maximum flexibility for day trips from Porto, it can be a burden once you reach the city, where parking is limited and often expensive. For many travelers, combining a private transfer for the journey with public transportation or short-term rentals for local exploration provides the best of both worlds.

Things to do when you get to Porto

Once you complete your Lisbon Airport to Porto transfer, a wealth of experiences awaits in this charming northern Portuguese city. Here are some must-do activities to add to your Porto itinerary:

Explore the Ribeira District

Porto's UNESCO-listed historical center, Ribeira, is characterized by its narrow winding streets and colorful buildings that cascade down to the Douro River. This vibrant neighborhood is best explored on foot, allowing you to discover hidden corners, local shops, and traditional restaurants. The waterfront promenade offers spectacular views of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Vila Nova de Gaia across the river. Visit during different times of day to experience the changing atmosphere—morning for peaceful exploration, afternoon for shopping, and evening for dining with a view of the illuminated bridge.

Visit the impressive Livraria Lello

Often cited as one of the world's most beautiful bookstores, Livraria Lello is a neo-Gothic gem that reportedly inspired J.K. Rowling during her time living in Porto. The ornate wooden staircase, stained glass ceiling, and carved bookshelves create an enchanting atmosphere for book lovers. Due to its popularity, it's best to purchase tickets in advance online to avoid long lines. Your entrance fee can be applied as credit toward a book purchase. It is the perfect opportunity to pick up a Portuguese author's work as a souvenir.

Take a Douro River cruise

Seeing Porto from the water offers a unique perspective of the city's six bridges and riverside districts. River cruises range from one-hour city tours to full-day excursions into the Douro Valley wine region. The shorter cruises typically pass under all six bridges, with commentary about their history and design. For a special experience, consider a sunset cruise when the city lights begin to twinkle across the water. Many cruise operators depart from the Ribeira docks, and advance booking is recommended during high season.

Sample port wine in Vila Nova de Gaia

Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, home to dozens of historic port wine cellars where this fortified wine has been aged for centuries. World-famous producers like Taylor's, Graham's, and Sandeman offer guided tours explaining the production process, followed by tastings of different varieties. Most cellars require advance reservations, especially during busy travel periods. For the best experience, visit at least two different cellars to compare styles and atmospheres. Many also offer spectacular views of Porto from their terraces—perfect for that Instagram-worthy photo.

When is the best time to visit Porto

The best time to visit Porto is during the late spring (May-June) or early fall (September-October) when temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C), and tourist crowds are thinner than in peak summer. These shoulder seasons offer ideal conditions for exploring the city on foot and enjoying outdoor dining at the riverside restaurants.

Summer (July-August) brings warmer temperatures averaging around 80°F (27°C) and more visitors, particularly in August when many Europeans take their annual vacation. While this period offers virtually guaranteed sunshine for your visit, you'll contend with higher prices and busier attractions. If you travel during this time, plan your sightseeing early in the day and make restaurant reservations in advance.

Winter in Porto (November-March) sees fewer tourists and lower prices, with temperatures rarely dropping below 45°F (7°C). While you might encounter some rainy days that make the city's steep streets slippery, this can be an atmospheric time to visit, especially around Christmas when decorative lights transform the historic center. Many restaurants offer special winter menus featuring heartier dishes perfect for the season, and you'll have a more authentic experience of local life during this quieter travel period.

It was a fantastic trip.

“We were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, we’d especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.”

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation

“Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.”

Daytrip never disappoints

“We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.”

Great way to travel and see some sights on the way

“We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.”

I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.”
