Visit the prominent circular castle atop a hill, and then appreciate the array of incredible traditional hand-embroidered wool rugs (called Tapetes de Arraiolos). These intricate creations have been a specialty of the region since the 17th century, and visitors can learn more about the craft in a local museum. The circular medieval hilltop castle at the top of the hill offers panoramic views across town and the rolling countryside beyond. Arraiolos is renowned worldwide for its hand-embroidered wool carpets (tapetes), a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages influenced by Moorish craftsmanship. You'll visit workshops where artisans create these intricate carpets using techniques passed through generations. The town also features a unique circular castle, charming central square, and historic church with beautiful traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles.
The journey from Cascais to Evora takes approximately 1.5 hours (about 150 km), with Arraiolos another 30 minutes beyond (25 km).
