See the Maueline window and the Charola rotunda, and then head below to enjoy peaceful walks through the green labyrinth of the Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes. From there, your guide can take you to the Old Town and the Praca da Republica, where you can explore the elegant arcades, templar cross tiles, and tiny local shops. Gothic beauty and royal tombs await in Batalha’s sky-high masterpiece of stone and silence. Stone tells a story in Batalha, where faith, art, and national pride rise in symmetry. Begin at the Mosteiro da Batalha, a UNESCO World Heritage marvel where flying buttresses and intricate carvings reach heavenward. Step into the Cloisters of King Joao I, where light dances through lace-like stone. Don’t miss the hauntingly beautiful Capelas Imperfeitas - roofless, majestic, and open to the sky. End with a taste of local tradition: try Cavacas or Brisa do Lis from a nearby cafe, with a view of this timeless Portuguese monument.

History and Cistercian beauty fill Alcobaca’s cloisters, kitchens, and carved marble tombs. In Alcobaca, love and loss endure in the carved stone. Visit the Mosteiro de Alcobaca, a Cistercian monastery and Portugal’s oldest Gothic church. Inside, the tombs of Pedro and Ines - lovers separated in life, united in death - lie face to face. Stroll through the vast Refectory and see the medieval kitchen’s ingenious water system. Then, find a moment of calm in the Cloisters of Silence, where time stills beneath the arches. Before leaving, try the legendary monk sweets at Pastelaria Alcoa - centuries of confectionery devotion in every bite.

Know more about your day trip

These monasteries represent some of Portugal's most important historical monuments. Tomar's Convent of Christ was the headquarters of the Knights Templar, featuring a unique round church modeled after Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre. Batalha Monastery showcases impressive Gothic and Manueline architecture, while Alcobaca houses Portugal's largest Gothic church and the famous tombs of Pedro and InĆŖs, subjects of Portugal's most tragic love story.
You'll have ample time to explore each historical site at your own pace. The itinerary allows 2 hours at Tomar's Convent of Christ, 2 hours at Batalha Monastery, and 1 hour at Alcobaca Monastery. This balanced schedule ensures you can appreciate each location's unique architecture and historical significance without feeling rushed.
Entrance fees to the monasteries are not included in the Daytrip service price. We recommend purchasing tickets individually upon arrival at each site. Consider getting a combined ticket if available, as it may offer savings when visiting multiple monuments in central Portugal.
Spring (April-June) and fall (September-October) offer the most comfortable weather and fewer crowds. Summer months can be hot and busy with tourists, while winter provides a more peaceful experience with cooler temperatures. All three monasteries are indoor attractions, making them suitable for year-round visits regardless of weather.
Yes, your driver will recommend local restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine between monastery visits. The Tomar area has several excellent dining options near the Nabao River where you can sample regional specialties like "fatias de Tomar" (sweet egg pastries) or fresh fish dishes.
While strict dress codes aren't enforced, modest clothing is recommended out of respect when visiting these religious monuments. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as you'll be exploring large stone complexes with many stairs. Bring a light jacket or sweater even in summer, as the stone interiors can be cool.
Photography without flash is generally permitted throughout these monuments. However, some specific areas or exhibitions may have restrictions. Your driver can advise on current photography policies. The intricate stonework, cloisters, and tombs offer spectacular photo opportunities to document your visit.
