Ollantaytambo
Formerly the Incan Emperor’s royal estate, Ollantaytambo is probably the longest continuously inhabited settlement in South America. Located in the Sacred Valley, this is the only place where the Incas gained victory against the Spanish conquistadors, albeit briefly. Still to this day there are a scattering of original Incan houses, as well as aqueducts from this time. The old town in particular is unique in Preu, built over 500 years ago and inhabited to this day by Incas. The jewel in the valley is certainly the ruins of the temple/fortress of Ollantaytambo. Books or personal guides are available in the market below and both will give you a good overview of the architectural and religious significance of each structure. The Temple of the Sun is particularly impressive with it’s 50-ton monoliths and sun calendars. The view of the town and the valley from the ruins is especially stunning.
