Visit Pompeii and learn more about ancient life before the eruption while admiring the volcanic beauty of the Amalfi Coast.
Main attractions
- The largest and most complete Roman city preserved anywhere in the world — buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD and excavated across three centuries to reveal streets, shops, bathhouses, brothels, gardens and domestic interiors frozen at the moment of destruction; the scale of the site, covering 66 hectares, makes it less a museum than a city you simply walk through
- The plaster casts of eruption victims, the Villa of the Mysteries' extraordinary fresco cycle and the Forum with Vesuvius framed beyond it are the three experiences that define a visit
Take note
- Book timed entry in advance; the site is vast and exposed — wear sturdy shoes, bring water and allow at least three hours minimum

Hike along a crater of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that famously buried Pompeii.
Main attractions
- The only active volcano on mainland Europe — Vesuvius last erupted in 1944 and remains carefully monitored; the crater rim at 1,281 meters is reachable by a well-maintained path from the upper car park, delivering views down into the steaming caldera and across the entire Bay of Naples, from Capri to the Campi Flegrei on a clear day
- The crater itself — 300 meters wide and 200 meters deep — is visible in its entirety from the rim path; sulfurous vents still emit gas from the caldera floor below
Take note
- The final path to the rim is steep and exposed — sturdy footwear essential; the summit is significantly cooler and windier than the base; bring a layer
- Mount Vesuvius is open daily year-round, typically opening at 9:00 AM, with closing times varying by season (earlier in winter, later in summer).
