Pacaya Volcano
Pacaya Volcano
Pacaya Volcano is one of Guatemala’s most accessible and exciting volcanic hikes, attracting adventurers eager to witness its raw, geological power. Rising over 2,500 meters, this active volcano has frequent lava flows, emitting smoke and heat that create a surreal landscape. The moderate hike is about 5 km and, depending on your skill level, takes about 4 hours total, winding through lush forests before reaching the rocky summit. Once at the top, visitors can experience the heat radiating from the volcanic vents (perfect for roasting marshmallows, a unique highlight of the trek). While eruptions vary, Pacaya remains one of the best places in Central America to see an active volcano up close. Expect to pay a fee for entrance to the national park and the mandatory guide. Sturdy footwear and layered clothing are recommended, as conditions can shift quickly, and one should keep in mind that altitude sickness is common for those who haven’t acclimated yet.

Antigua
Founded in the 16th century, Antigua served as Guatemala’s capital until it was destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1773. Following the earthquake Antigua was rebuilt, developing its own, more resilient Baroque style, but kept its original Renaissance layout. Today, the city is recognized by UNESCO as being one of the earliest and best-preserved examples of city planning in Latin America, and for the slew of monuments and ruins that preserve early Spanish culture, and the importance of the Church during the colonial era. In fact, of the many gorgeous churches in the city (just take a look at the Cathedral), Antigua’s main landmark is a Baroque arch, which is actually a covered bridge for nuns to travel between parts of their convent. The other central attraction is the lively mercado, where you’ll find everything from fresh fruit to traditional handicrafts offered in the vibrantly colored stalls.
