As the creators of world-famous characters, Tintin, Lucky Luke, and the Smurfs, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the people of Brussels love their comics! So much so, that the city has more comic strip artists per capita than anywhere else in the world! Taught in local art schools and commemorated in museums and galleries, this art form even covers entire streets! Head to Marolles, Sainte-Catherine, and other neighborhoods around the city and gaze up at the countless murals depicting cuttings from your favorite comic strips! Not only famous for comics, Brussels was the home of renowned artists such as René Magritte and Jacques-Louis David. Their works are exhibited around the city, the former celebrated with his own museum! Design is in full force in Brussels; the city is bestowed in architectural monoliths. Just step into Grand Place, considered to be the most beautiful square in the world, and admire the eclectic architecture including the square’s crown jewel, the marvelous Brussels Town Hall. Don’t forget to stop by Mannequin Pis. This humorous little statue is iconic in Belgian heritage, almost as much as their sweet treats and golden ales!
