A forest recreation area famed for autumn maples, suspension bridges, and a 295-foot (90 m) waterfall.

What to do:

  • Cross the Aowanda Suspension Bridge, 295 feet (90 m) above the Wanda River gorge and 600 feet (180 m) long
  • Walk the Maple Forest trail during the autumn season, when the area's Formosan sweetgum and maples turn red and gold
  • Follow the path to Aowanda Waterfall, a short but scenic walk from the main visitor area

What to see:

  • The Aowanda Waterfall, at its most powerful after mountain rain
  • Cherry, plum and Formosan sweetgum groves that give the park a different character in every season
  • Views over the confluence of the Wanda and Beigang rivers, framed by steep forested ridges

Take note:

  • Entry is ticketed, with higher prices during the peak maple season; check current details before your trip (tickets are not included with Daytrip)
  • Maple colors usually peak from late November into December, later than most northern hemisphere destinations
  • The access road is long and winding, and weekend traffic in foliage season can be heavy, so an early start pays off

  • Explore the recreated tribal dwellings, each built in the style of a different indigenous group

What to see:

  • The Aboriginal Village Park, opened in 1986 and laid out as a walkable sequence of recreated settlements with full-scale reconstructions of traditional houses, built with authentic materials and techniques
  • The attached theme park with roller coaster rides, train rides, performances, English gardens, and other family-friendly entertainment

Take note:

  • Entry is ticketed and includes the amusement rides and ropeway; tickets are not sold through Daytrip
  • The site is large and built on a hillside, so wear comfortable shoes
  • Performance schedules vary by day and season, so check times on arrival to plan around them
