Tipping is appreciated in Cote d'Ivoire but not strictly required. Some restaurants add a service charge, and otherwise rounding up or leaving around 5 to 10 percent for good service is a kind gesture. Small tips for hotel staff, drivers and guides are welcome. Keeping small CFA franc notes on hand makes tipping easy as you travel.

Cote d'Ivoire uses the West African CFA franc (XOF). Larger hotels and some businesses in Abidjan accept cards, but cash is essential for taxis, markets and smaller purchases. You can exchange money or use ATMs at the airport and around the city. It is helpful to carry small notes, as getting change for large bills can be tricky.

The official language is French, used in business, government and daily life. Many local languages, such as Dioula, are also spoken across Cote d'Ivoire. In tourism settings and larger hotels you may find some English, but it is less common, so a few French phrases goes a long way and are warmly appreciated by locals.

Ivorian cuisine is bold and flavorful. Try attieke, a staple made from grated cassava, often served with grilled fish. Sample kedjenou, a slow-cooked chicken or guinea fowl stew, and alloco, fried plantains. Garba, attieke with fried tuna, is a popular street food. Round it off with fresh tropical fruit or locally grown coffee and cocoa, both major Ivorian products.

The most comfortable time to visit is during the drier months, roughly November to March, when there is less rain and travel around Abidjan is easier. The climate is hot and tropical year-round. The longer rainy season runs from about April to July, bringing heavy downpours, with a shorter rainy spell later in the year. Pack light, breathable clothing whatever the season.
