Know more about traveling from Plage de l'Hermitage
From Saint-Denis, the island's capital in the north, Plage de l'Hermitage is approximately 55 km (34 miles) — typically around an hour by road depending on traffic, which on the west coast highway can be heavy during peak hours. From Saint-Pierre in the south, the beach is roughly 45 km (28 miles). The west coast is Réunion's most developed and accessible stretch, making the Hermitage area a practical destination from most parts of the island.
Most visitors find three to four hours is enough to enjoy the beach fully — time to swim in the lagoon, snorkel along the reef, and settle into the laid-back rhythm of the place. If you plan to explore the nearby stretch of coast toward Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, grab lunch at one of the waterfront spots, or rent equipment for a longer snorkel session, a half-day works well. It pairs naturally with other west coast highlights if you want to build a fuller day.
It's one of the best choices on the island for families. The reef barrier keeps the lagoon calm and shallow — conditions that are far more forgiving than the exposed, wave-heavy beaches on Réunion's east and south coasts. The water is clear enough to see the bottom, the beach is wide and sandy rather than rocky, and the overall environment is relaxed and well-frequented. It's a beach that works for genuinely mixed groups, not just experienced swimmers.
The lagoon is the main draw, and snorkeling here is genuinely rewarding — the reef shelters a range of tropical fish and coral even close to shore. Glass-bottom boat tours typically depart nearby for those who want a guided look beneath the surface. The beach itself is well-serviced, with rental equipment, food vendors, and shade available along the shore. The adjacent town of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains adds a lively marina, local restaurants, and a laid-back Creole beach town atmosphere worth a short wander.
Plage de l'Hermitage is widely considered Réunion Island's most beautiful beach, and it earns that reputation. A natural coral reef runs parallel to the shore, creating a calm, shallow lagoon that's ideal for swimming and snorkeling without the rough open-ocean swells that define much of the island's coastline. The white sand is well-kept, the water is vivid turquoise, and the setting is backed by shady takamaka trees — making it a genuinely relaxing escape from the island's more rugged interior. For visitors who want to experience Réunion's softer, coastal side, this is the essential stop.

So, so happy I stumbled upon this website to book two private transports while visiting Lima, Peru. They were both one-way trips approximately 3 hours in length. Great communication as soon as everything was booked via email and I then downloaded their app. I had a few issues with the app and the customer service was awesome trying to assist me in getting it corrected. Honestly impressive customer service which gave you a positive feeling that you made the right choice. Both drivers were right on time - No issues whatsoever! Can't say enough about the service and ease of everything when travelling so far away. Great job to the daytrip team! Would strongly recommend.
Driving in Réunion is manageable, but the main west coast highway around Saint-Gilles sees significant congestion, and parking near the beach can be limited during busy periods. With a Daytrip transfer, a local driver handles all of that — you're dropped directly at the beach and collected when you're ready, without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads or hunting for a parking space after a day in the sun. You also gain the option to add sightseeing stops along the way, whether that's a viewpoint over the coast or a detour through Saint-Gilles itself, turning the journey into part of the experience rather than just a logistical task.
