Daytrip es amado en todo el mundo. Aquí está el porqué.
Yes, the pool at the base of La Fortuna Waterfall is a designated swimming area, and it is one of the most popular activities at the site. The water is refreshing, fed by the Fortuna River. A lifeguard is on duty during opening hours, and swimming is restricted to the designated zone to keep visitors safe from the currents near the base of the falls.
The drive from La Fortuna to Poas Volcano National Park is approximately 75 miles (120 km) and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by car, passing through highland coffee and strawberry farms near Sarchi and Alajuela. The scenic route offers great views of the Central Valley and is best navigated with a knowledgeable private driver familiar with the winding mountain roads.
Poas Volcano National Park is generally open daily, but access to the crater viewing platform can be temporarily closed due to increased volcanic activity, high sulfur emissions, or heavy fog. Authorities monitor activity closely and will restrict entry when necessary for visitor safety. It is recommended to check the park's official website for current conditions before your visit.
La Fortuna Waterfall (Catarata Rio Fortuna) plunges roughly 230 feet (70 meters) into an emerald-green pool within a protected 210-acre ecological reserve. The hike to the base involves descending about 500 steps through dense rainforest. Visitors can swim in the pool at the base of the falls, and the surrounding reserve is home to abundant birdlife and tropical vegetation.
Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most accessible active volcanoes, featuring one of the world's largest crater lakes filled with acidic, turquoise-green water. From the well-maintained viewing platform, you can peer into the steaming main crater, which periodically emits sulfuric gases. A second crater holds a serene lake surrounded by cloud forest. The park has easy walking trails and is home to diverse birdlife and highland flora.
Poas Volcano National Park charges a per-person entry fee for foreign visitors, which must be paid online in advance through Costa Rica's national parks reservation system. Timed entry slots are required to manage visitor numbers and protect the ecosystem, so booking your slot well ahead of your visit is strongly recommended, especially during the dry season between December and April.
For Poas, bring a light jacket as the summit sits at around 8,900 feet (2,700 m) above sea level and can feel cool and misty. A rain poncho is also useful. For La Fortuna Waterfall, wear sturdy, non-slip footwear for the stairs, and bring swimwear if you plan to swim. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle are essentials for both stops.
Despite its volcanic environment, Poas National Park supports a surprising range of biodiversity. The cloud forest around the crater is home to hummingbirds, quetzals, and various highland bird species. Coatis, rabbits, and other small mammals are also commonly spotted along the trails. The unique highland ecosystem, shaped by volcanic soil and mist, supports plants found almost nowhere else in Costa Rica.
