Know more about your day trip

In 1917, three shepherd children—Lucia Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto—reported six apparitions of the Virgin Mary between May and October. The Lady of Fatima shared three secrets including visions of hell predictions about World War II and the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in 1981. The children's accounts were eventually deemed worthy of belief by the Catholic Church transforming this rural Portuguese location into one of the world's most important Marian shrines.
During your 3.5-hour tour, your private guide will prioritize the vast Sanctuary complex including the Chapel of Apparitions built at the exact location of the Marian sightings, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary with tombs of the visionaries, and the modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity completed in 2007. Also visit the homes of the three children in the nearby village of Aljustrel (2 km from the Sanctuary), and the Valinhos site where the fourth apparition occurred.
Fatima can be visited year-round, though the experience varies significantly with the calendar. Major pilgrimages occur on the 13th of each month from May to October, with May 13th and October 13th drawing the largest crowds (sometimes exceeding half a million people). For a more contemplative experience with fewer crowds, visit on weekdays outside these dates. The site is particularly beautiful in early morning or evening light when the white basilicas glow against the sky.
While Fatima holds special significance for Catholics, it offers cultural and historical interest for all visitors. The modern architecture of the new basilica, the social history of rural Portugal in the early 20th century, and the geopolitical context of the apparitions during World War I provide fascinating perspectives beyond religious devotion. The Fatima Museum (Museu de Fatima) presents historical artifacts and context that appeal to visitors with various interests and backgrounds.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential as the sanctuary covers a large area with stone surfaces. Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is requested out of respect for the religious site. Sun protection is important as much of the sanctuary has limited shade. Bring a water bottle, though cafes and shops around the sanctuary perimeter offer refreshments. Many visitors bring candles to light at the designated area near the Chapel of Apparitions.
Despite being a pilgrimage site, Fatima offers a range of dining options to suit different preferences. Around the sanctuary, you'll find simple cafeterias and bakeries serving quick meals and pastries. For more substantial dining, restaurants like A Tapadinha, Tia Alice, and O Convite serve traditional Portuguese cuisine featuring regional specialties. Most restaurants are concentrated along Avenida Jose Alves Correia da Silva, the main road leading to the sanctuary. Your guide can help you find a place to eat and relax.
Even on a day trip, you can observe several regular ceremonies. The sanctuary conducts daily Mass in multiple languages (schedules posted at the information center). The rosary is recited daily at the Chapel of Apparitions at 12:00 PM and 6:30 PM, often followed by a small procession. If your visit extends into evening hours, the Candlelight Procession at 9:30 PM (9:00 PM in winter) offers a moving experience as thousands of pilgrims process around the square with candles. Times are subject to change, so check online for the most updated schedule.
