Venice to Salzburg by train

Traveling by train to Salzburg is tricky, as there are very few trains without required transfers.

OBB has one direct train, but it leaves Venice at 9 PM and arrives in Salzburg at 3 AM. This can be very difficult on your sleep schedule and you won’t enjoy Salzburg to its fullest if you’re exhausted from a night in the train.

OBB operates another route between Venice and Salzburg with just one transfer in Villach. It leaves Venice around 10 AM daily and takes 6 hours. You would arrive in Salzburg around 4 PM. Tickets are about $88 (€82), but discounts are available for children, the handicapped, and those of retirement age.

Venice to Salzburg by bus

The bus might be a cheap option, but you are paying with your time. Trips take between 8.5 and 12 hours and require at least one transfer in either Ljubljana or Munich. Tickets cost between $27 and $43 (€25- €40)and allow one piece of luggage per passenger.

Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains

If you’re traveling with kids, this one is a must! Hellbrunn Palace was built by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus in the 17th century, and he added a fun twist: trick fountains. Visitors never know when they’ll get sprayed with a hidden jet of water around the palace grounds, so be prepared to get wet!

Dom zu Salzburg (Salzburg Cathedral)

However, if you’re traveling from Venice to Salzburg, you are probably visiting in the summer. The weather is sunny with little rain, and the streets come alive with festivals, farmers markets, and outdoor shows. Expect temperatures around 76°F (24°C).
