Overview: car trip from Venice to Salzburg

Salzburg is one of the best-preserved cities for Baroque architecture and is the birthplace of classical music as we know it today. It is an excellent next stop on your quintessential European vacation. A road trip directly from Venice to Salzburg will take about five hours, but in an area of Europe with so much history to discover, you’ll want to take the scenic route.

If you’re visiting in the summer, Sankt Gilgen is breathtaking this time of year. The opening scenes to The Sound of Music were filmed on this lake and it is easy to see why this location was chosen. Another cool summer detour is the Werfen Ice Caves. Head underground to see the largest ice caves in the world (just make sure you bring a jacket!)

The drive will take you across northeastern Italy and into the center of Austria. At the end of the day, you’ll arrive in Salzburg just in time for dinner. Have traditional Austrian dishes like schnitzel, strudel, and goulash in cozy taverns and gourmet restaurants.

About Salzburg

After your drive from Venice to Salzburg, you have a lot to look forward to! Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria, nestled in the foothills of the Alps. It is known as the "City of Mozart" and the "Rome of the North." Its history, architecture, and musical heritage have made it a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit destination for travelers from around the globe.

Salzburg's history dates back to Roman times when it was a strategic outpost along the trade routes between Italy and northern Europe. In the Middle Ages, it flourished as an independent principality ruled by powerful archbishops who left a lasting legacy of grand palaces, churches, and fortifications.

Nature lovers will appreciate Salzburg's scenic surroundings. The Salzach River winds through the city, and the majestic Alps loom in the distance in all your photos. Outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and skiing are popular year-round.

The Birthplace of Mozart

One of Salzburg's most famous residents is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in the city in 1756. Mozart's musical genius is celebrated throughout Salzburg, with attractions like Mozart's birthplace and residence, where you can learn more about his life and works. The city's annual Mozart Week festival attracts classical music enthusiasts from around the world.

The Sound of Music

Salzburg’s musical heritage doesn’t stop with Mozart. It is also widely known to Americans as the backdrop to the 1965 film The Sound of Music. Surprisingly, the film was not popular with the Austrian audience, but that hasn’t stopped the people of Salzburg from giving visitors what they want. If you're a fan, you can find plenty of The Sound Of Music tours, gifts, and photo ops around town!

Venice to Salzburg by train

Traveling by train to Salzburg is tricky, as there are very few trains without required transfers.

OBB has one direct train, but it leaves Venice at 9 PM and arrives in Salzburg at 3 AM. This can be very difficult on your sleep schedule and you won’t enjoy Salzburg to its fullest if you’re exhausted from a night in the train.

OBB operates another route between Venice and Salzburg with just one transfer in Villach. It leaves Venice around 10 AM daily and takes 6 hours. You would arrive in Salzburg around 4 PM. Tickets are about $88 (€82), but discounts are available for children, the handicapped, and those of retirement age.

Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains

If you’re traveling with kids, this one is a must! Hellbrunn Palace was built by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus in the 17th century, and he added a fun twist: trick fountains. Visitors never know when they’ll get sprayed with a hidden jet of water around the palace grounds, so be prepared to get wet!

Take a The Sound of Music Tour

Salzburg has 360 degrees of beautiful backdrops, so it is easy to see why The Sound of Music was filmed here. Follow in the footsteps of the von Trapp family with a guided Sound of Music tour while you’re in Salzburg. This full-day excursion will take you to filming locations from this cult classic, including the Mirabell Gardens, Hellbrunn Palace, and Lake Wolfgang.

Visit Hohensalzburg Fortress

The impressive medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress towering over Salzburg is the biggest fully preserved castle in Europe. Tour the fortress grounds and museums, and don’t forget the Instagram-worthy views of Salzburg and the surrounding Alps.

Museum der Moderne (Museum of Modern Art)

The Museum of Modern Art is located atop the Mönchsberg mountain. It has rotating exhibitions of modern art, interactive displays, and, as a bonus, stunning views of Salzburg. The museum focuses particularly on photography and graphic art.

Hike up Kapuzinerberg

Escape the city crowds and hike up Kapuzinerberg! This small hill overlooks Salzburg and has peaceful walking trails with scenic viewpoints. You will also find the Capuchin Monastery nestled into the side.

The monastery’s architecture is simple and modest when compared to the rest of Salzburg’s over-the-top Baroque style, but is in line with religious beliefs at the time regarding worldly comforts.

Mozart's birthplace and residence

Mozart is easily the most famous resident of Salzburg. Discover Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's life and works by visiting his birthplace and residence, both of which are located in the Old Town. Explore exhibits showcasing Mozart's childhood home and learn about his musical legacy.

Dom zu Salzburg (Salzburg Cathedral)

The stunning Baroque architecture and ornate interior of Salzburg Cathedral have left visitors in awe for centuries. Its grand dome, marble columns, and impressive frescoes include works by the Italian artist Giuseppe Solari. Mozart was christened in this cathedral, and you can see relics from 1300 years of religious history.

Take a Salzach River Cruise

Take a guided cruise along the Salzach River for a relaxing afternoon activity. If you prefer to go in the evening, try a dinner cruise with live music.

When is the best time to visit Salzburg

Salzburg is a popular vacation destination year-round. No matter when you plan your trip, you are sure to find the streets of Salzburg to be like a fairy tale with plenty of seasonal activities.

However, if you’re traveling from Venice to Salzburg, you are probably visiting in the summer. The weather is sunny with little rain, and the streets come alive with festivals, farmers markets, and outdoor shows. Expect temperatures around 76°F (24°C).

Spring and fall are slightly less crowded but come with more rain and chilly evenings. You’ll also find slightly lower accommodation prices.

Cities in Europe pull out all the stops for Christmas! From Amsterdam to Austria, you’ll find Christmas markets and decorated storefronts. Salzburg is no different! Twinkling lights line the streets, trees are decorated in the squares, and market stalls sell hot wine and ornaments.

Perguntas e Respostas sobre Viagens de Venice para Salzburg

Is Salzburg cheap?
Salzburg is, by no means, a budget vacation destination, but it isn’t overly expensive either. You can save some money by choosing cheaper accommodation and choosing activities within your price range. You can expect slightly lower prices than European capitals like Vienna, Amsterdam, or Berlin.
Can you take a train from Venice to Austria?
Yes, both northern Italy and Austria have robust train networks. Depending on the city in Austria you are trying to reach, you may need to transfer trains on your way to your destination. You can order tickets and check timetables online, but spontaneous ticket purchases in the train station are also possible on many routes.
How do I go from Venice to Salzburg?
You can reach Salzburg by bus, train, or car. The slowest way is certainly by bus, at about 9 hours of travel time. Trains and buses all require transfers, but with a private vehicle, you can enjoy Salzburg in about 5 hours of direct travel.
Can you take a direct flight from Venice to Salzburg?
No, all flights between these destinations require a connecting flight in Vienna. It will be much faster and more convenient to travel by car, which takes about 5 hours. For comparison, trains and buses take between 6 and 12 hours.
Is the train ride from Venice to Salzburg scenic?
You will certainly see a lot on your train ride, but it is not the best way to travel. There is only one direct train between Venice and Salzburg, and it runs from 9 PM to 3 AM. All other trains require at least one transfer, usually 2-3. It is hard to enjoy the scenery when you are constantly anticipating your next transfer, so opt for a bus or car instead.
How much time should I stay in Salzburg?
Salzburg is quite compact, and you can see the major sites in 1 to 2 days. If you plan to spend time in the many nature parks around, schedule an extra day for your hiking and skiing excursions.

Great job

First time user. Venice to Salzburg. Very convenient. With this service I was able to operate on my schedule versus train or plane which basically gave us an extra day in Salzburg. A little problem connecting at Venice since no cars can get directly to the hotels but the driver connected via phone and we got together on the mainland with little problem. Dropped us off right at the door of our hotel in old town Salzburg. Roomy, first rate vehicle. Will definitely use this service again as an alternative to the trains.

Day trip - Venice to Salzburg, Salzburg to Prague, Prague to Budapest

We used Day trip to travel - Venice to Salzburg, Salzburg to Prague, Prague to Budapest It was a great experience, door to door service fantastic! We had been using trains and planes at the beginning of our journey in Europe. Journeys to and from the train station/airport with luggage and children etc..... not having enough room on the train to store luggage & luggage retrieval at the airport these hassles were not missed. Our 3 drivers: Tomáš R; Michal S; and Goran C All 3 drivers were wonderful, very knowledgeable, courteous, friendly and helpful. Always checking if we were ok, needed to stop etc. and very helpful with any questions we may have in general and more. I have recommended your business to all my family and friends, they have also spread the word to people they know... as they too agree that its a great service. We will defiantly be using your service again. Paula P.

DayTrip from Venice to Salzburg

Looking for an alternative to the train/plane from Venice to Salzburg, I stumbled across DayTrip. I'm so glad I did. We had Igor M. as our driver. He was great. Not only was he on time and polite, he was a pleasure to talk to and made the time fly by. I would request Igor again if I'm in the area again.

Salzburg to Venice, and Venice to Bellagio

I would give this company 6 stars if possible. The website is efficient and easy to navigate. Staff answer emails and follow up emails swiftly. They are able to anticipate problems, which is the hallmark of any good company working in the hospitality industry. My first trip with them was Salzburg to Venice. Michal arrived early, and was wonderful. I planned to stop at one of the salt mines on the way, and Michal took me there, and waited. Afterwards, we passed a large castle, and I exclaimed how magnificent it was. Michal offered to pull over and let me tour it as well! Once in Venice, Michal helped me secure a water taxi to my hotel. The experience was so fantastic, I booked again with Daytrip from Venice to Bellagio. Once again, the driver Dejan was pleasant and eager to help. We stopped in Verona, which was terribly crowded that day. We set a meeting place and reconnected easily after touring Juliet's Castle and enjoying a fantastic lunch. Dejan didn't complain about driving miles away to finally locate parking. This company really "goes the extra mile", no pun intended. The drivers and all the support staff are true professionals. Recommend highly.

A great way to travel around Europe

We used Daytrip to travel from Venice to Salzburg and then later from Salzburg to Prague. It is a fantastic to way to travel. Being picked up from your hotel in one city and deposited at your next hotel in another city made getting around Europe so easy. We had checked out alternative options for travel between the cities via rail/ bus and found Daytrip was a cheaper alternative and far less complicated means of travel from city to city.

Salzburg to Venice

No faster, easier, or cheaper way to get through the Alps. Our driver, Marko, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and a great driver. This was the easiest and least stressful leg of our trip thanks to Daytrip. It was a nice reprieve from dragging our bags on and off trains, planes, buses, as well as traipsing down the street. I will definitely look for opportunities to use them again.
