About Munich
Nestled in the south of Bavaria, Munich stands as a beacon of history, innovation, and resilience. Renowned for its charming blend of tradition and modernity, the city offers a myriad of attractions for visitors to explore. Visitors of all ages and interests will find something they love: science, sports, beer, history, nature, and food!
Brief History of Munich
Munich was first mentioned as a settlement for Benedictine monks in the 8th century, hence the name MĂŒnchen, or âto the monks.â It is hard to believe how far Munich has come since its humble beginnings. It has seen the rise and fall of the Holy Roman Empire, the Black Death, the Kingdom of Bavaria, and Nazi Germany.
Munich historically tended to be at the center of Central European skirmishes and battles and was not spared from the devastating bombings in World War II.
The BMW and Other Inventions in Munich
Munich has a long legacy as a hub of industry, science, and technology. It should come as no surprise that the âBayerische Motoren Werkeâ (BMW), or Bavarian Motor Factories, is based in Munich. Luxury car enthusiasts can visit the flashy BMW World and BMW Museum.
Other scientific advancements, like modeling clay, MP3 technology, and self-driving cars also came out of Munichâs community of inventors.
Bavarian Beers
Bavaria has a long history of mastering the art of beer brewing. During the Thirty Years War in 1632, the King of Sweden threatened to burn Munich down unless he was given 600,000 barrels of HofbrÀuhaus beer and some hostages. Today Munich has over 60 beer gardens and 6 major breweries you can enjoy.
World War II
Munichâs layers of archeological and architectural history were threatened by heavy bombing during World War II. Munich also served as a refugee and displaced persons camp in the post-war period.
The majority of the city had to be rebuilt from the ground up. However, careful restoration of historic buildings saved many sites and artwork. The pre-war blueprint of the city was followed exactly, except for a few areas that needed modernization for traffic concerns. Today, Munich blends the modern with the medieval.
Munich in the Modern Day
Munich is the third largest city in Germany and the capital of the Bavarian region. It is home to six million people and is a hub for German excellence in science, technology, finance, and business. Many large multinational companies are in Munich, as well as several research institutes. It is among the most expensive areas to live in Germany.
Visitors and residents alike use Munichâs extensive cycling paths, U-Bahn, and S-Bahn systems to get around the city with ease. From Munich, many day trips are possible. Its central location within Bavaria makes it easy for you to visit castles, nature reserves, and architectural wonders.

The RĂŒckl family glassworks factory is a star of the Czech crystal artisan heritage. Tour the factory and pick up some luxury glassware as an elegant souvenir you wonât find anywhere else. How far off the beaten path you go is up to you.
Traveling from Prague to Munich on Sundays
Unlike the Czech Republic, Germany is much more strict on closing businesses and preventing loud noises on Sundays. If you are traveling on a Sunday, you may find many places closed once you cross the border. Make sure that your car is full of gas (or better yet, hire a driver to make sure for you)!
Hire a Private Driver with Daytrip

Things to do when you get to Munich
After you get to Munich from Prague, you'll be greeted with a plethora of things to do. See your favorite soccer team, indulge in a cold beer, and take a photo with your dream car.
Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel
Marienplatz, the main square, is the perfect place to begin your exploration of Munich. Marienplatz is the bustling central square that has served as the heart of the city since the 1100s. Admire the stunning architecture of the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) and the iconic twin towers of the Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady). Don't miss the opportunity to witness the Glockenspiel's animated figurine performances, which occur multiple times a day, and play out scenes from Munich's past.
Munichâs Englischer Garten (English Garden)
Englischer Garten is one of the largest urban parks in the world- even larger than NYCâs Central Park. It has over 900 acres of scenic walking paths, waterways, and beer gardens. Be sure to visit the Chinese Tower beer garden for a refreshing brew while taking in views of the park.
Allianz Arena Tour in Munich
For FC Bayern fans, the Allianz Arena tour is a must. This arena hosts 75,000 fans and is a delight for soccer (European football) fans everywhere. It was one of the host arenas of the 2006 World Cup. It should take about 1.5-2 hours to visit the museum and do the arena tour.
Deutsches Museum Munich
One of the largest science museums in the world, the Deutsches Museum in Munich has a section for everyone: chemistry, health, space exploration, aviation, math, coding, and more! This massive and kid-friendly museum is perfect for a rainy or cold day.
Dachau Memorial
Dachau is on the edge of Munichâs municipal area and is an important memorial to the Holocaust. As the first concentration camp in Nazi Germany, Dachau was in operation for 12 years and stood as a model for future camps. We highly recommend a guided tour by Dachau staff for the most in-depth learning experience. To make getting there easy, your Daytrip private driver can bring you right to the memorial towards the end of your trip between Prague and Munich.
Disneyâs Inspiration: Neuschwanstein Castle
If you have a free day, consider a day trip out towards the Austrian border to the Neuschwanstein Castle. This 19th-century Bavarian castle was Walt Disneyâs inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty castle. Be aware though that if you are visiting in the winter, the snow may prevent the castle from being open because of the steep hills, so do check ahead of time.
Culinary Delights in Munich
Sample traditional Bavarian specialties such as weiĂwurst (white sausage) served with sweet mustard, pretzels, and schnitzel with potato salad. For dessert, can we suggest apfelstrudel (apple strudel) topped with vanilla sauce? Everything goes down smooth with a refreshing glass of locally brewed beer or a crisp glass of Bavarian wine.
Oktoberfest Dirndls and Lederhosen
Join millions of visitors from around the world and experience the vibrant atmosphere that makes Oktoberfest a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dirndls and lederhosen were the traditional clothes for Bavarian peasants, and are the official outfit for Oktoberfest. If you donât already have your outfit, Munich is a good place to purchase one. For Oktoberfest, closed-toe comfortable shoes are recommended.
When is the best time to visit Munich
Munich is best known for Oktoberfest. In late September, the city's beer gardens come alive with Oktoberfest celebrations- traditional music, food, and beer. Visitors have a chance to experience Bavarian culture at its finest. So once youâve finished having a glass of seasonal burÄĂĄk in Prague in early September, head to Munich for a beer.
Or, if you prefer Munich when it's less crowded, visit in spring. The weather is pleasant, and you'll be able to roam the streets and visit the beer gardens with fewer tourists. Plus, the sprawling Englischer Garten is at its best with flowers in bloom.
Donât let the cold put you off! Winter (December to February) is another great time to visit Munich. Snow transforms Munich into a winter wonderland, with festive markets, seasonal decorations, and opportunities for ice skating and winter sports. You can warm up with mulled wine and roasted chestnuts at the city's famous Christmas markets or take a day trip to nearby ski resorts for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and sledding.

Last minute travel snafu solved by Day Trip
âLast minute cancellation of an afternoon train from Munich to Prague was very troublesome. We needed to get back to Prague that day for a 7am flight home. We contacted Day Trip online with our issue. They responded in less than 30 min. They indicated it usually takes 8-12 hours to schedule such a long drive (4.5+ hours) but would try. In another 30 min, they contacted me and said they just located a driver who was doing a drop off in Salzberg and could be in Munich in 2.5 hours. The driver showed up right on time. Daniel was a very personable young man; we talked about a variety of topics during the 4.5 hour ride. The time went by quickly. We got to our hotel around 11:30pm. Fortunately, our hotel was literally across the street from PRG and after a few hours sleep, we got to plane check-in right on time.â
âVery excellent service. Not every expensive and you have an option to customize your trip and keep on your budget. Every thing went well from beginning to end. We booked another daytrip and canceled because there wasn't enough people. So booked mytrip 24 hrs before our journey and confirmed everything within an hour. Every reliable and convenient. We used their service from Munich to Prague and from Prague to Betlin.â
Great door to door service - went above and beyond!
âWe had a great trip from Munich to Prague!! Our driver was very informative! We added two stops along the way - Dachau and Regensburg. So worth it! Has we taken the train we would have had to take a day or off or Munich itinerary to do those things. One driver also went above and beyond - when we got to Dachau we realized some clothes had been left in the closet in the hotel in Munich. He helped us call the hotel with his phone since our cellular wasnât working well and drove us back to Munich to pick up our missing items! Thank you so much! We definitely will use DayTrip again!!â
âWe had a car pick us up at Munich and drive us to Prague and it was a fantastic decision! Our driver was on time and so easy to connect with even with 2 parties coming in from 2 different places. It was so much easier to have someone else be in charge of the driving after an overnight flight and made that part of the trip stress free. Our driver was fantastic! He was personable and professional and a fantastic driver! I would highly recommend using Day Trip to anyone I know. Thanks again for helping us make our trip a smashing success.â
