A snow-white neo-Gothic castle on the edge of a lake, Brunszvik Castle is Hungary's most personal Beethoven site, and one of its most romantic parks.
What to see
The Beethoven Memorial Museum, housing the composer's correspondence with Josephine Brunszvik and the Streicher piano he played here
The English landscape park, designed from swampland in the early 19th century, with 200-year-old swamp cypresses, a lake, and a wooded island said to be where Beethoven sat to compose
Outdoor open-air concerts held on the island in summer, continuing a 60-year Beethoven festival tradition
What to do
Walk the nature trail through the park to the island and Beethoven's favourite spot by the water
Browse the museum's interactive exhibition, including the composer's famous letters to his 'Immortal Beloved'
Take note
- The park has an entry fee; verify opening hours and admission online before visiting: https://agroverzum.hu/en-information/

Founded in 1820 as the private garden of Jozsef Nador, Palatine of Hungary, the Alcsuti Arboretum is 40 hectares of landscape garden that puts on a different show every season.
What to see
More than 300 tree and shrub species, including Hungary's oldest Lebanese cedar, over 170 years old, alongside Turkish hazelnuts, maples, oaks, and chestnuts
The romantic ruins of Nador's neoclassical castle, destroyed by fire in World War II, now draped in greenery at the heart of the garden
What to do
Follow the nature trails through the arboretum and out to the lake and chapel
Visit the small exhibitions in the chapel and dollhouse on the history of the estate
Take note
Open year-round; verify current hours at alcsutiarboretum.hu
One of the largest snowdrop fields in Europe carpets the ground in late February and March, while fireflies in early summer are spectacular

Etyek has quietly become Hungary's most interesting wine region, a cluster of low hills producing sharp, aromatic whites that winemakers and food lovers have been discovering for decades. What to see
- The rolling vineyard landscape of the Etyek-Buda wine region, planted primarily with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris
- A string of family-run wineries and cellars, most offering informal tastings without the formality of larger appellations What to do
- Visit one of the local winery estates for a tasting of the region's signature whites
- Pair your wines with local Hungarian cheeses and charcuterie at a cellar or wine bar in the village What to eat
- Etyek is known for its farmhouse langos (fried dough topped with sour cream and cheese) sold near the main square on weekends
