Know more about your day trip

Ashford Castle is a luxury hotel on the shores of Lough Corrib, adjacent to Cong village. The castle grounds and immediate estate are private, but you can walk along some of the lakeside paths and enjoy views of the castle exterior from public areas nearby. The village itself is very walkable, and the abbey ruins are a short stroll from the main street.
Admission to Kylemore Abbey is not included in the Daytrip price and must be purchased separately. Booking tickets in advance online is strongly recommended, especially during the busy summer season, as visitor numbers can be high and pre-booked tickets save time at the entrance.
Kylemore Abbey is about 42 miles (68 km) from Galway, and the drive takes roughly 1 hour via the N59 through Connemara. The road passes through some of the most dramatic bog and mountain scenery in the west of Ireland before arriving at the lakeside estate.
The abbey is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Nov. 19 and Dec. 24, 25, and 26. If you are planning a visit close to these dates, check the official Kylemore Abbey website for any additional closures or seasonal changes to hours before you travel.
Kylemore Abbey is a 19th-century Gothic castle estate built as a private home and later purchased by Benedictine nuns, who still live and work there today. It is famous for its fairy-tale appearance reflected in the adjacent lake, its restored Victorian Walled Garden, and its Gothic Church. It is one of the most iconic landmarks in Connemara.
The Victorian Walled Garden is one of the largest fully restored walled gardens in Ireland, originally planted in the 1870s. It is divided into sections including a kitchen garden, flower garden, and ornamental areas. Walking through it feels like stepping back into the Victorian era, with beautifully maintained planting throughout the warmer months.
With around 90 minutes in Cong, a good plan is to start at the ruins of Cong Abbey and the nearby monks' fishing house by the river. From there, walk through the village to browse local shops and stop for a coffee. A short stroll toward the Ashford Castle entrance gates and along the lakeshore rounds out the visit nicely.
Cong is a small and beautiful village between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask in County Mayo. It is famous as the filming location of the classic 1952 John Ford film "The Quiet Man" and is home to the evocative ruins of Cong Abbey, a medieval Augustinian monastery. The village has a charming main street with craft shops and cafes.
