Know more about your day trip
Obidos stands out as one of Portugal's most perfectly preserved medieval towns, completely encircled by ancient stone walls. Known as the 'Wedding Present Town' because Portuguese kings traditionally gave it to their queens as a gift, Obidos features whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant flowers, narrow cobblestone streets, and a 12th-century castle now converted into a luxury hotel. Its historical charm remains remarkably intact.
You'll have approximately 3 hours (180 minutes) to explore Obidos at a relaxed pace. This gives you ample time to walk the complete town walls for panoramic views, explore the maze of charming streets, visit the main church, browse local shops for handicrafts and souvenirs, and enjoy a leisurely meal or refreshments at one of the traditional taverns or cafes.
Yes, walking the medieval walls is one of Obidos' most popular activities. The 1.5-kilometer circuit offers spectacular views of the town's terracotta rooftops and the surrounding countryside. The walls reach up to 13 meters in height and can be accessed via stairs near the main gate (Porta da Vila). Note that portions lack handrails, so appropriate caution is needed, especially with children or if you have a fear of heights.
Don't miss trying Ginjinha (or Ginja), a sweet cherry liqueur traditionally served in small chocolate cups that you can eat after drinking the liqueur. Also look for regional pastries, local cheeses, and fresh seafood dishes in the town's restaurants. The town is known for its chocolate festival (usually in March/April) and medieval fair (July), when traditional foods from these periods are showcased.
Obidos is approximately one hour from Sintra by car. The drive takes you through scenic Portuguese countryside and along portions of the Silver Coast. Your private driver will select the most efficient and interesting route, allowing you to relax and enjoy the journey. The comfortable transfer provides a perfect opportunity to learn about Portuguese history and culture from your knowledgeable driver.
The most photogenic locations include the main entrance gate (Porta da Vila) with its beautiful blue and white azulejo tiles, the panoramic views from the town walls, the flower-decorated streets with their whitewashed houses and colorful trim, the medieval castle exterior, and the charming main street (Rua Direita) with its shops and cafes. Early morning or late afternoon light creates especially magical images.
Yes, Obidos is wonderfully suited for families. Children typically enjoy walking the medieval walls, exploring the narrow streets that feel like a maze, discovering the castle, and sampling chocolate cups filled with cherry liqueur (non-alcoholic versions are available). The town's compact size prevents exhaustion, and the storybook atmosphere captures young imaginations. However, be cautious with small children on the town walls due to limited safety barriers.
Obidos offers excellent shopping for traditional Portuguese crafts. Look for handmade ceramics, embroidered textiles, cork products, and local wines. The town's signature souvenir is bottled Ginjinha liqueur, often packaged with chocolate cups for serving at home. Many shops also sell high-quality Portuguese tiles (azulejos), handcrafted jewelry, and artisanal soaps. Most shops are concentrated along the main street (Rua Direita).
