Belize City to Lamanai and Orange Walk: Private day trip

Lamanai was first settled around 1500 BC as a small agricultural community, and by the time it was abandoned in 1680 had developed into a major Mayan metropolis. Unlike most Mayan cities that are centered around large ceremonial plazas, Lamanai was built in a linear fashion along the banks of the New River and the New River Lagoon. After being abandoned, the site was reclaimed by the jungle, and only around 5% has been investigated. But the excavated and partially excavated have revealed a treasure trove of Mayan art, architecture, and artefacts. Many of the major structures bear larger-than-life carvings, such as the 2-meter-tall face of the Maya Sun God on the Temple of the Mask, and the heavily-eroded forms at the base of the 33-meter-tall High Temple. Before exploring the complex, i’s worth stopping by the small museum at the entrance to learn more about the site and examine the intricate pottery and jewelry uncovered at the site.
