Know more about your day trip

The most popular day trips from Amman include the Dead Sea for floating in its mineral-rich waters, Ma'in Hot Springs, the biblical site of Mount Nebo, the mosaic city of Madaba, and the desert wilderness of Wadi Rum. Each is accessible within a few hours' drive from the capital.

Jordan is generally considered one of the safest countries for visitors in the Middle East. Amman has a low crime rate, and Jordanians are known for their hospitality toward visitors. Standard precautions should be taken, especially in crowded areas. The border regions with Syria and Iraq are typically avoided, but tourist areas are well-protected and secure.

The best time to visit Amman is during spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when temperatures are mild, ranging from 59-77°F (15-25°C). Summers (June to August) can be very hot, while winters (December to February) can be surprisingly cold with occasional snow. Avoid traveling during Ramadan if you want to experience regular business hours.

The Jordanian Dinar (JOD) is the official currency. It's one of the strongest currencies in the region. ATMs are widely available in Amman and major tourist destinations. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and upscale restaurants, but cash is preferred in markets and smaller establishments.

While Jordan is relatively liberal compared to some neighboring countries, modest dress is appreciated, especially in more conservative areas. Women should avoid revealing clothing, with shoulders and knees covered in public places. Men typically wear long pants rather than shorts. In upscale areas of Amman, dress codes are more relaxed, but modest attire is still recommended at religious sites.

While Petra can technically be visited as a day trip from Amman (3-hour drive each way), it's better to allocate at least one overnight stay to fully appreciate this vast archaeological site. A proper visit to Petra requires 4-6 hours of walking at minimum. If you must do it as a day trip, leave Amman very early in the morning to maximize your time.

Arabic is the official language of Jordan, with the Levantine dialect spoken in Amman. English is widely understood and spoken, especially in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. Road signs are typically in both Arabic and English. Learning a few basic Arabic phrases is appreciated by locals.

Amman is Jordan's largest city and the capital. It is among the safest cities in the Middle East to visit, and is popular for its long history coupled with modern amenities.
