The airport sits in El Alto, with central La Paz roughly 30 to 60 minutes away by road, depending on traffic, and a steep descent into the city. The area is not suited to exploring on foot, so arranging private transport is the most comfortable choice. The dramatic Valley of the Moon rock formations are nearby, and La Paz is the launch point for trips to the Tiwanaku ruins, Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni salt flats.

Bolivia uses the Bolivian boliviano (BOB). Cash is essential, as cards are accepted mainly at larger hotels and restaurants in La Paz, while taxis, markets and smaller spots prefer cash. You can exchange money or use ATMs at the airport and in the city. US dollars in good condition are widely exchangeable, so carry some local bolivianos for everyday spending.

Spanish is the main official language, alongside Indigenous languages including Aymara and Quechua, which are widely spoken in the La Paz and El Alto region. English is limited, mostly to hotels and travel businesses. Learning a few Spanish phrases can be helpful and appreciated, and a translation app is handy for everyday interactions.

La Paz and El Alto sit very high, and the airport is the world's highest international airport, so altitude can affect visitors quickly on arrival. Take it easy for the first day or two, rest, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol and heavy meals at first. Locals swear by coca tea to ease symptoms. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice.

Bolivian cuisine is hearty and warming, well suited to the highlands. Try saltenas, juicy baked pastries filled with meat and sauce, and api, a warm purple corn drink. Sample silpancho, a breaded meat dish with rice and potato, and anticuchos, grilled skewers sold from street stalls. Quinoa, corn and many potato varieties feature in classic Andean dishes.

The dry season, from about May to October, is the best time to visit La Paz, with sunny days and clear skies ideal for sightseeing and onward travel to the salt flats and Andes. Nights are cold at this altitude year-round, so pack warm layers. The wetter season, from November to March, brings more rain and cloud, but fewer visitors.

You will receive the vehicle that best fits the number of travelers in your group, ranging from a sedan to a van for groups of up to 7. Depending where you travel, you can book anything from a sedan comparable to a Toyota Corolla to a Mercedes V-Class to a Classic Cuban Car. While the exact model may vary, we always ensure that the vehicle provided meets your needs in terms of safety, reliability, and comfort.
