Overview: car trip from Milan to Interlaken

The drive from Milan to Interlaken takes 3 hours and 40 minutes with a private car service, making it the best option for your Italy to Switzerland transfer. The 183-mile (295 km) distance covers an unforgettable scenic route, and with Daytrip, you’ll have the option to elevate your travel experience further with sightseeing stops.

One popular stop is Como City, on the southern shores of the lake of the same name. Como City features a famous Gothic cathedral, neoclassical villas, and other incredible architectural facets alongside a storied history in opposition to Milan. Visitors can even take a funicular rail up a mountain to nearby Brunate, offering incredible views of Lombardy’s natural beauty.

Or, consider a detour to Lugano, a lake with settlements dating back to the Stone Age. This is a great stop for art history buffs, with a wealth of frescoes and intricate facades on display highlighting the Renaissance and Baroque influences on the area.

About Interlaken

After your exciting journey from Milan to Interlaken, you will be in one of the most naturally stunning cities in Switzerland. The city is nestled between three massive mountains, named Mönch and Jungfrau, which provide an incredible backdrop to all of the outdoor recreation in Interlaken. Interlaken gets its name from its position between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The mountains and lakes around Interlaken offer great day trip opportunities.

This area is sometimes called the adventure capital of Switzerland because the mountainous landscape offers unparalleled canyoning, white water rafting, bungee jumping, skydiving, and a range of hikes and treks across all difficulty levels. The area is rich in natural splendor, from misty mountains to clear alpine lakes, even the less adventurous traveler can look forward to relaxing among the tranquil surroundings.

The city’s folklore dates back to Saint Beatus, who while seeking solace supposedly stumbled upon a dragon inhabiting one of the area’s many caves and drove it into the Lake Thun. The caves here stretch along for over half a mile (a distance of around 1000 meters) and offer plenty of opportunities for exploration.

The town of Interlaken itself is relatively flat compared to its mountainous surroundings, and visitors can look forward to very good walkability through the main shopping center and residential area. The traditional chalet-style houses are also worth admiring on your wanders throughout the city.

The fascinating sights, world-renowned adventures, and cozy, welcoming atmosphere make Interlaken a must-see destination for travelers of every taste. Your tour of Switzerland should include plenty of time to explore here and soak up all of the natural wonders of the region.

The private driving transfer balances value with convenience to create an unforgettable trip.

Book train journeys in advance

If you plan to take any train-based day trips to the areas around Interlaken, including up Jungfrau for any outdoor activities, you should book your tickets reasonably far in advance. How to get from Milan to Interlaken

For the journey from Milan to Interlaken, you have a couple of different transportation options to choose from. The total travel time for the fastest express train is about 3 hours and 15 minutes, but you will need to account for the time spent getting between your accommodation and the train station in both cities, meaning the train is not necessarily any faster than driving.

See the St. Beatus-Höhlen Caves

This series of caves is one of the largest in Switzerland and one of the only that are available for exploration. It’s here that St. Beautus is rumored to have discovered a dragon and banished it to the lake below. Today, visitors can explore depths of up to 285 feet (87 m) and wander through various chambers and grottos within the caves, as well as witness the thundering waterfalls and the many different rock structures within.

Spend time in Hohematte Park

This massive green space was originally owned by the Augustinian convent and has been maintained in the centuries since by locals. The park is designed to provide an open space for games, picnics, and gatherings, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Swiss Alps.

While largely undeveloped, Hohematte Park is home to seasonal events such as an ice skating rink in the colder months. The area is the perfect place to enjoy a slower pace of life for an afternoon after adventuring around Interlaken.

Go to Harder Klum

Harder Klum is called the “top of Interlaken,” located in the heights of Jungfrau and accessible by cable car, this stunning viewpoint offers an unmatched panoramic view over the two lakes and the three main mountain peaks beyond. There is also the Panorama Restaurant at the top, where travelers can enjoy a romantic meal with 360 views of the scenic surroundings.

Even the cable car ride up to Harder Klum is a breathtaking adventure, with remarkable views all the way up the mountain.

When is the best time to visit Interlaken?

The best time for your trip from Milan to Interlaken will depend on the activities you want to engage in once you arrive. It was a fantastic trip.

“We were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, we’d especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.”

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation

“Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.”

Daytrip never disappoints

“We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.”

Great way to travel and see some sights on the way

“We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.”

“We used the service twice while in Thailand. Extremely prompt and efficient customer service. Best rate being offered in Chiang Mai for the travels. Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.”
