Limon, or Puerto Limon, is the lively Caribbean capital of Costa Rica's eastern coast and the country's main Caribbean port. It is known for its vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, calypso and reggae rhythms, colorful colonial-era buildings, and a famously festive Carnival. Surrounded by rainforest, banana plantations, and palm-lined beaches, Limon has a relaxed, tropical Caribbean character all its own.
Stroll the seafront Parque Vargas with its towering palms and resident sloths, and admire the faded grandeur of the old port buildings. Browse the central market for spices and Caribbean snacks, and look out to Isla Uvita offshore, where Columbus is said to have landed. Limon is also the gateway to nearby beaches, rainforest, and wildlife reserves.
Costa Rica uses the Costa Rican colon (CRC). In Limon, it is best to carry cash in colones for the market, local eateries, and small shops, as US dollars are less widely used here than in the Pacific resort towns. Cards are accepted at larger businesses and hotels. ATMs in town dispense colones and sometimes dollars.
Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica. Limon's Caribbean coast has a rich linguistic heritage, and many locals also speak Limonese Creole, an English-based creole rooted in the area's Afro-Caribbean history. English is fairly widely understood along this coast, so visitors often find communication easy, though a few Spanish phrases are always welcomed by friendly locals.
Popular day trips include Cahuita National Park, where rainforest trails meet white-sand beaches and a coral reef, and the laid-back surf town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca near the Panama border. Nature lovers enjoy the Veragua Rainforest park and visiting a sloth sanctuary, while the Tree of Life wildlife center is a family favorite. Daytrip's private drivers make reaching these Caribbean highlights easy and comfortable.
Limon is the home of Costa Rica's Caribbean cooking. Try rice and beans simmered in coconut milk, a regional twist on the classic, and rondon, a hearty coconut seafood stew. Snack on a pati, a spicy meat-filled pastry, and savor jerk-spiced chicken. Wash it all down with refreshing agua de pipa straight from a green coconut.
Limon is a working port city with a livelier, grittier feel than the resort towns, but most visits pass without trouble. Stick to busy, well-lit areas, especially at night, keep valuables out of sight, and watch your belongings around the market and port. Use registered taxis or a pre-arranged private transfer after dark, and the usual travel sense goes a long way.
Tipping in Costa Rica is relaxed. Restaurants add a 10 percent service charge by law, so extra tipping is optional, though a little more for excellent service is appreciated. Small tips for guides, drivers, and hotel staff, in colones or dollars, are welcome. Keep small bills on hand, and simply rounding up is a friendly, common gesture.
