Taya Caves
Taya Caves, a hidden treasure of Buddhist artistry, can be found nestled within the precincts of Josen-ji Temple near Kamakura. Within the caves, you'll encounter representations of Buddhist deities, revered figures from Buddhist history, renowned temples, mythical creatures, mandalas, zodiac symbols, and family crests. These caves were meticulously excavated and sculpted by devoted Shingon Buddhist monks during a span extending from the Kamakura period (1192-1333) to the Edo period (1603-1868). Their origins date back to the 13th century when the inaugural shogun established his rule in nearby Kamakura. Upon arriving at Josen-ji, you'll receive a candle, which you can light from the entrance candle inside the caves. To access the caves, an entrance fee of approximately 400 yen is required at Josen-ji Temple. Taya Caves are open from 9AM to 4PM daily. Know more about your day trip

The Taya Caves are a network of underground tunnels and chambers hand-carved by Buddhist monks between the 12th and 17th centuries. What makes them extraordinary are the numerous relief carvings and Buddhist images etched directly into the soft sandstone walls. Unlike most tourist attractions, these sacred caves remain relatively unknown to foreign visitors, offering a rare look into esoteric Buddhist practices.
The cave entrance is through the Josenji Temple grounds. Inside, you'll find narrow passages (sometimes requiring ducking) extending about 600 meters. The caves maintain a constant cool temperature of around 50°F (10°C) year-round. Lighting is minimal, and the floors can be uneven and sometimes wet. Candles are provided to enhance the appreciation of the intricate carvings.
In Yokohama, highlights include the Minato Mirai 21 waterfront district, featuring its iconic Landmark Tower and Ferris wheel, as well as Yokohama Chinatown, Japan's largest. Other notable attractions include the Cup Noodle Museum, Yamashita Park, which overlooks the harbor, and the historic Yamate district, home to Western-style houses from the 19th century. Your driver can help prioritize based on your interests.
This trip offers striking contrasts to Tokyo's urban landscape. The Taya Caves provide a spiritual and historical experience in a natural setting. Yokohama, while urban, has a more relaxed atmosphere than Tokyo thanks to its seaside location, spacious waterfront areas, and blend of Japanese and Western architectural influences from its history as Japan's first port opened to foreign trade.
This trip is suitable for families with children approximately 6 years old and older. The caves fascinate most children, though very young ones might find the dark passages intimidating. Yokohama offers child-friendly attractions like the Cup Noodle Museum (where kids can create custom ramen), Cosmo World amusement park, and the Anpanman Children's Museum. The trip provides educational value about Japanese history and culture.
This trip is suitable year-round as the caves maintain a constant temperature regardless of season. For Yokohama, spring (March-May) offers cherry blossoms and pleasant temperatures, while autumn (September-November) brings colorful foliage. Summer can be hot and humid, but allows for evening harbor activities. Winter is less crowded with clear days, though it can be occasionally cold.
