Chumphon is the main ferry departure point for Koh Tao, one of the world's top destinations for learning to dive. Koh Phangan and Koh Samui are also accessible from here. That said, the ferry crossing to Koh Tao alone takes around 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so combining an island visit with a same-day return from Bangkok is a stretch. Most travelers use a Chumphon day trip to explore the province itself, then arrange the island ferry as a separate leg of their journey.
Chumphon is approximately 460 km (286 miles) south of Bangkok. By private transfer the drive takes roughly 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and your chosen route.
