Cartagena de Indias is Colombia's crown jewel on the Caribbean coast. Its UNESCO-listed walled old city is a stunning labyrinth of colonial plazas, colorful flower-draped balconies, and centuries-old fortifications. It is also celebrated for its vibrant Afro-Colombian culture, lively nightlife, and warm Caribbean setting.

Wandering the walled city's cobblestone streets is the essential experience. Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the imposing 17th-century Spanish fortress, is the city's most impressive historical monument. The bohemian Getsemani neighborhood, full of street art, local bars, and a nightly plaza scene, is the most vibrant and authentic part of the city to explore.

Colombia uses the Colombian peso (COP). Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops within the walled city. Cash is useful at local markets and street food stalls. ATMs are available throughout the city center.

Spanish is the official language. English is spoken at hotels and in tourist-facing businesses within the walled city and Bocagrande. Outside these areas, Spanish predominates. Colombians are generally warm and patient with visitors.

December through April is the dry season and the most popular time, with low humidity and reliable sunshine. May through November is wetter and hotter, with occasional afternoon showers. Cartagena is warm year-round, so light breathable clothing is essential whenever you visit.

Try arepa de huevo (a fried corn cake stuffed with egg), fresh ceviche made with Caribbean seafood, and bandeja paisa for a hearty full meal. The street food vendors near the clock tower sell excellent empanadas and fresh fruit cups with chili. Finish with a cold Costeño beer, the regional favorite.

The walled city and Getsemani are easily walked. Taxis are plentiful and affordable for reaching Bocagrande and the wider city. For day trips to Playa Blanca and Totumo Volcano, Daytrip's private transportation provides a comfortable alternative to navigating local tours and connections.

Popular day trips include Playa Blanca on Baru Island (one of the finest beaches on the Caribbean coast), the Totumo Volcano (a unique mud volcano where visitors bathe in the crater), the Rosario Islands marine reserve, and the colonial heritage town of Mompox, a UNESCO-listed riverside gem.
