Trains from Tangier to Fez

Moroccan Railways has frequent trains between Tangier and Fez. The journey takes 3 and a half to 4 and a half hours and usually requires a transfer in Kenitra. Tickets cost $11 to $27, and you can find their full timetable online.

Buses from Tangier to Fez

Buses take significantly longer, about 7 hours, to reach Fez. Tickets are $16 to $23 and this route takes you around the coast, stopping at Kenitra on its way to Fez.

Go back in time in the Medina

The Fes el-Bali Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning 540 acres with over 9,000 winding cobblestone streets. It is the most complete and preserved medieval city of the Arab world. Enter the medina through the Bab Bou Jeloud Gate, or Blue Gate, to start your trip in the oldest section. With such a large distance to cover, schedule an entire day for this part of your trip.

The Medina is completely car-free and its maze-like streets will take you back in time to its founding in the 9th century. It has over 300 mosques and dozens of administrative buildings, as it served as the capital for Morocco multiple times.

Here you’ll find thousands of shops in the _souks, _or bazaars, where you can buy handmade rugs, leather goods, spices, perfumes, pottery, and jewelry. Watch craftsmen make pots and rugs right in their shops, and purchase a fez, the traditional hat for this city.

The Moroccan heat is very intense in the summer, especially for inland cities like Fez. Temperatures in July and August regularly reach 96° F (36° C) with a very high UV index. If you’re unaccustomed to extreme heat, avoid the summers in Morocco.
