In the 12th century, a humble fishing village faced an existential threat as the shores of the North Sea were being washed away. Highways were re-routed out of the city center, tram lines were improved, and roads were returned to bikers and pedestrians. The people of Amsterdam changed their fate and the city now has 320 miles (515 km) of dedicated bike lanes for short and long-distance travel.
