Car trip from Passau to Prague

Unsurprisingly, a city straddling the tri-border of Bavaria, Austria, and the Czech Republic is blessed with breathtaking natural beauty. What might be surprising is that these postcard vistas continue for the entire 114-mile car trip from Passau to Prague!

Germanic timber villages, lush woodlands, tranquil waterways, and flowing hills as far as the eye can see reside along the ride through Europe's Garden of Eden. You'll want a comfortable and relaxing mode of transportation for this unforgettable experience.

Fortunately, you've come to the right place. In our extensive travel guide, you'll uncover insider tips and find out the best way to get from Passau to Prague in 2024!

About Prague

After the fairytale drive from Passau to Prague, you'll arrive at the Czech Republic's capital. The streets hugging the Vltava River house over 1.3 million residents, including 304,000 students. Its central location and proximity to its neighbors, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and Poland, make Prague an excellent base for exploring Europe.

Although Prague is the most populous Czech city, it began as a small Slavic settlement in the 8th century. In the 9th century, Prince Bořivoj ordered the construction of the iconic Castle District. By the Middle Ages, the region was one of Europe's most affluent cities due to its position along a vital trade route between Europe and the Middle East.

From the bloodshed of the Hussite Wars to the tragic events of World War II, the city suffered for centuries. Fortunately, the Czech capital made out better than many of its neighbors and retains its ancient charms while looking towards the future. Gothic towers litter the cobbled lanes, and colorful Baroque buildings house bars serving the beloved Pilsner beers. The mix of traditional ways of life, sustainable measures, and high student popularity created a melting pot of energy in its UNESCO-listed Old Town!

From Passau to Prague: travel tips

The drive from Passau to Prague is relatively straightforward. But by following these travel tips, you can improve your overall experience!

Go sightseeing

Since the drive from Passau, Germany, to Prague, Czech Republic, is such a picturesque voyage, many travelers only consider it a scenic mode of transportation. But you can actually step into the vistas and explore landmarks and natural wonders en route.

The historic Sazava monastery is ideal for history buffs. Architecture lovers will adore the wedding cake Castle Hluboka, and if you want to unwind, stop at Cesky Krumlov, an enchanting spa town that's also a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Pack essentials

A travel tip you can use for every road trip is to pack a light bag separate from your main luggage with all the essentials for easy access. The last thing you want is to dig through your suitcase when a train conductor wants to inspect your tickets.

But you should also bring leisurely goods to make your life easier. Pack snacks, water, entertainment outlets, and a camera to create memories on the road. If you're traveling in the summer, don't forget sunscreen, glasses, and a hat!

Prepare for changes

Although they're close on the map, Passau and Prague have different ways of life. Language is always a notable element when traveling, and once you cross the frontier, you'll change from German to Czech. Almost half of the Prague population can communicate in English, but locals appreciate some basic phrases.

Currency is another worry for tourists. Prague isn't part of the eurozone, so you'll switch to the national currency, the Czech Koruna. Check the live exchange range for the best deals and learn about the tipping cultures if you plan on sampling the hearty local food!

How to get from Passau to Prague

Central Europe has an amazing transportation network, so there's a mode of transportation waiting for you, whether you want the cheapest, fastest, or easiest way to get from Passau to Prague. To help you decide how to get from Passau to Prague, we've outlined the three ways you can travel below!

Bus from Passau to Prague

If you're traveling on a budget, look no further than the bus from Passau to Prague. Deutsche Bahn and Flixbus operate on this route, with tickets starting at as low as €9.99 one way. However, there are a few drawbacks to the low fares.

The most notable con of the bus is that it’s often crowded since only one daily direct service connects Passau and Prague. Alternatively, you can take an indirect bus with Deutsche Bahn and transfer to Linz Central Station.

  • Journey time: 4–6 hours
  • Latest direct departure: 10:45 p.m.
  • Lowest ticket price: €9.99
  • Onboard service: WiFi, extra legroom, restroom, and private outlets

The downside to traveling from Passau to Prague by train is that no direct routes are available. After purchasing a ticket online or at the station, from Passau Hbf to Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, you must change trains at least once in Linz or Vienna. This is something to keep in mind if traveling in a group, with kids, or with luggage.

  • Fastest journey: 5 hours and 7 minutes
  • Average journey: 6 hours and 35 minutes
  • Expect to pay: €22–€30
  • First departure: 4:11 a.m.
  • Last departure: 9:47 p.m.

But first, we offer you the chance to experience outstanding cities and attractions en route that many travelers miss, such as Ceske Budejovice, the home of Budweiser, Konopiste, one of the Czech Republic's many fairytale castles, and Cesky Krumlov, one of the prettiest towns in Europe!

Things to do when you get to Prague

Although the Czech capital is arguably Europe's most beautiful city, it doesn't just get by on its good looks. After your trip from Passau, you'll find museums, galleries, attractions, and parks among the many things to do when you get to Prague!

Walk the Royal Route of Prague

The royal route of Prague is the path that the Czech monarchs would follow on their coronation. Today, it's a historical walking trail that takes you back to the past to witness some of the city's most exquisite monuments in the heart of Prague's UNESCO-listed Old Town.

The venture begins in the picture-perfect Old Town Square before ending at the dominating Prague Castle District. Along the way, you'll pass some stunning historical landmarks like the Old City Hall, the Powder Towers, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Charles Bridge.

Wander the Prague Castle District

The Prague Castle District is another free experience. But it offers million-dollar views. Whether you're overlooking the Old Town terracotta roofs, the lush woodlands of Petrin Hill, or the colorful buildings lining the brick roads, you'll be trapped in wonder and awe.

The district is free to enter, but the castle tours and Golden Lane require a fee. However, if you visit the latter after 6 PM, you can walk the street for nothing!

Relax in a park

Prague is one of Europe's greenest cities. As a result, it has everything from cozy urban green spaces to sprawling forest-like woodlands.

Petrin is the city's most beloved outdoor space. The leafy paths and the sweet aromas of fruit trees transport you a million miles from the bustling downtown area. At the top, you can snap a photo of the Rose Gardens or climb the Petrin Tower, resembling a famous one in Paris!

Some other parks within the city that are ideal for exploring or relaxing are:

  • Letna Park
  • Kampa Park
  • Karlachovy Sady
  • Franciscan Gardens

Sip a beer along the Naplavka

The Naplavka is Prague's most famous riverside promenade, where pints of Pilsner beer flow as rapidly as the Vltava River along its banks. Many students come here to sip a refreshing drink on one of the boats bobbing on the water or in the recently developed bars built into the walls with contemporary designs.

If you don't want a drink, a leisurely stroll will reveal eye-catching views of Prague Castle and the Lesser Town. And if you're lucky enough to be here on a Saturday, don't overlook the festive farmers market, which sells anything from handmade goods to local delicacies.

When is the best time to visit Prague?

The Czech capital has a pleasant year-round climate, a vibrant nightlife, and an abundance of indoor and outdoor activities. There's never a bad time to drive from Passau to Prague. However, if you want to unlock the full potential of this bucket-list city, consider traveling in the spring.

From March to May, the average daily high temperature is a very nice 69° Fahrenheit, hitting higher figures towards the end of this period. In the spring you can enjoy outdoor activities and walking tours from dusk until dawn rather than enduring the sweltering heat and crowds of summer.

The most significant reason to travel in the spring is to avoid gridlock and bottlenecks from large tourist groups. You can stroll across the Charles Bridge without bumping shoulders and enjoy a slow-paced life at popular tourist attractions.

Another great option is around Christmas for Europe's famous Christmas markets. Nearly every public space in every town, village, and city fills with festivities, and Prague’s Christmas Market is one of the best! Feast on specialties from gingerbread to pork knee and mulled wine while enjoying traditional performances backed by twinkling lights.

Excellent Experience!

We used mydaytrips.com to get from Passau Germany to Prague. The website is so well designed, informative and easy to use. You input your pick up point and destination and it immediately prices it out (adding passengers and luggage). It then loads stopovers you may add based on your itinerary. We added a stopover in Cesky Krumlov (CK). You can decide how long you want your stopover to be. The price increases accordingly. The planning could not have been easier! Payment is in full at booking but it has a 48 hour free cancelation (I believe it's 48hrs). A few days before the trip we received an email with the drivers full name, contact info and make, model, color and license plate number of his car ( a nice BMW). Our driver Petr, arrived 15 minutes early and waited patiently right in front of our viking ship as we were checking out. He helped with our luggage and offered us bottle water and some beer! The drive was lovely and we enjoyed our 3 hour stopover in CK which is referred to as a “fairytale” village and I can see why! 3 hours was plenty of time to first grab a coffee, then walk a bit, visit the castle grounds and finish up with lunch. We arrived at our designated pick up point 15 minutes early and Petr was ready and waiting. He drove us right to the front door of our hotel in Prague. We talked the entire day. Such a lovely gentleman, very professional and friendly! I highly recommend this service (they offer services everywhere) and if coming or going to the Czech Republic I would see if you can specifically request Petr.

Private transfer from Passau to Prague

A group of 6 persons used Daytrip to take us from Passau (after our boat bike tour) to Prague. The transfer included 2 attractions. We chose Cesky Krumlov and Hluboka. The van was roomy, clean and was able to accommodate the luggage for 6 passengers. The driver was polite, drove safely and offered to guide us through Cesky Krumlov. WOW, it was a hidden gem! We spent more than the allotted 2 hours as we decided to have lunch at the attraction. While this meant we didn't see Hluboka, it was worth the delay as the restaurant that the driver suggested was amazing. The driver was very flexible and only wanted us to have a good experience. Wonderful way to get from one location to another with door to door service.

Passau to Prague - Excellent Trip

This was a great way to travel from Passau to Prague. We got off our cruise and Shpendi was waiting for us so we were not at the mercy of train schedules and connections and could sightsee along the way. Shpendi was great company and took us sightseeing along the way -- finding us a restaurant that we were interested in and helping us connect with our AirB&B in Prague. Looking back, this was one of our favorite parts of the trip.

Convenience and comfort outstanding for drive from Prague to Passau

Needing to transfer from Prague to Passau to embark on our Viking Cruise, we chose My Day Trip over the hassle of train travel involving a transfer and lugging our baggage from place to place. We had good communication from the company which included a photo of the driver and the make of his car. Arriving on time, our Czech driver Matej M. was courteous, friendly and spoke excellent English. We scheduled one stop at Pisek to enjoy a small historic town and have lunch. Matej walked around the town with us, which included the oldest surviving bridge in the country, and assisted us in buying lunch we could eat along the river bank. We enjoyed lively conversation as we drove in comfort through the countryside and arrived on time at the dock, just a few feel from the ship. I highly recommend this service and our driver Matej in particular.

Great Service!!!

We booked Daytrip for transportation from Passau, Germany to Prague with a sightseeing stop in Pisek along the way. Before the trip started we had some questions about the pickup. Our email was answered almost immediately and in a most helpful manner. Our driver picked us up right on time in a very nice, clean, and comfortable car. He was very friendly, informative, and, most importantly, an excellent driver. The door to door service was outstanding. We will certainly book Daytrip again.
