Daytrip é amado em todo o mundo. Aqui está o porquê.
El Zonte is excellent for beginner surfers, with several surf schools offering lessons for all ages and abilities. The waves at the main beach are forgiving for first-timers, and instructors typically provide boards, rash guards, and safety briefings. Lessons usually last about 90 minutes to 2 hours. Booking in advance is recommended during weekends and holidays when demand is higher.
Swimming at Tamanique Waterfalls is one of the main attractions. Several natural pools at the base of the cascades are deep enough for a refreshing dip, surrounded by lush forest and the mist of falling water. The pools are cool but pleasant on warm days. Bring a swimsuit, a towel, and water shoes if you have them, since rocks underfoot can be slippery and uneven.
Tamanique Waterfalls are about 35 miles (55 km) southwest of San Salvador, roughly a 1-hour and 30-minute drive through coastal mountain terrain. El Zonte sits another 10 miles (16 km) further along the Pacific coast, about 25 minutes from Tamanique. The full round trip from San Salvador, including 2.5 hours at the waterfalls and 2 hours at El Zonte, totals around 7 hours and 15 minutes.
El Zonte has become a well-established traveler destination and is considered safe, especially in the central beach area where most restaurants, accommodations, and surf schools are located. As with any beach town, basic precautions apply, such as keeping valuables out of sight and not leaving belongings on the beach unattended. Many visitors come for surfing and beach days without incident.
The hike to Tamanique Waterfalls is moderately challenging. The trail descends steeply through tropical forest, with many stairs and uneven sections, though handrails are in place along key parts. The walk down takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and the climb back up is more demanding. Sturdy shoes are essential, and the path may not suit visitors with limited mobility, knee issues, or balance concerns.
El Zonte is one of El Salvador's most popular surf destinations, famous for its consistent point break that suits both beginners and experienced surfers. The beach has also earned the nickname "Bitcoin Beach" because many local restaurants and shops accept Bitcoin as payment. Beyond surfing, visitors enjoy yoga classes, beachfront dining, and a relaxed bohemian atmosphere that contrasts with busier coastal towns nearby.
Pack swimwear, a towel, sturdy hiking shoes for Tamanique, water shoes for the rocky pools, sun protection, and reef-safe sunscreen for El Zonte. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and small bills in US dollars, the official currency of El Salvador. A waterproof phone case is handy near the falls. A light rain jacket is wise during the wet season from May through October.
The dry season from November through April is generally the best time to visit, with sunny weather and easier hiking conditions at Tamanique. Surfing in El Zonte is consistent year-round, but the rainy season from May to October produces bigger swells favored by experienced surfers. Waterfalls flow more dramatically after rain, but trails can be muddy and slippery during this period.
