From Seville to Lagos
Drive the distance and trot the globe from Seville to Lagos by car! As you drive from the Kingdom of Spain to the Portuguese Republic you’ll have the time of your life on an enriching car trip with an English-speaking driver.
What you’re leaving behind
With a metropolitan population of about 1.5 million, Seville ranks 26 as the most populous municipality in the EU. It boasts a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprised of three structures:
- A Cathedral
- The General Archive of the Indies
- The Alcázar Palace complex
You’re leaving behind the only river port in Spain, situated roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Atlantic Ocean.
Where you’re headed
Say hello to Portugal! Portugal is a member of NATO, the UN, the Schengen Area, and the EU. If you look at continental Europe on the map you’ll notice that the furthest point to the west can be found in Portugal. You’ll also notice that Lagos (not to be confused with Lagos in Nigeria) basically sits at the edge of Europe.
And what else sits at the edge of Europe? A beach paradise that invites you to dive into their history. Let’s learn about Lagos!
About Lagos
Before you journey from Seville to Lagos, this is what you should know.
Lagos, which literally means “lakes” in Portuguese, is a coastal city with over 2000 years of history – fittingly named based on its proximity to the Bensafrim River. It’s been ruled by a number of civilizations through the ages, including the Romans, the Moors, the Visigoths, and the Byzantines.
The municipality of Lagos is divided into four different “freguesias” or civil parishes:
- Odiáxere
- Luz
- São Gonçalo de Lagos
- Bensafrim e Barão de São João
Coastal life
When locals aren’t relaxing on the beach, they’re leveraging their naturally beautiful homes to support themselves. For ages, fishing has supported the economy, but moving forward into the second half of the 20th century tourism began to boom. Moving the economy to focus more on tourists, especially during the summer when opportunities are at their peak.
Beyond the coast
Not everyone in Lagos lives on the beach. However, most of the inhabitants reside near the coast and earn a living with tourism and providing services. As you move further away from the beach, you’ll find that most work with nature in different ways, mainly agriculture.
So…how can you prepare yourself properly for Portugal?
Seville to Lagos travel tips
The road from Seville to Lagos is a perfect showcase of Iberian history and culture. To ensure you have a perfect trip, keep these travel tips in mind:
Stop for sightseeing
One of the biggest advantages of driving from Seville to Lagos, whether you rent a car or hire a private driver, is you're in complete control. Stop to see the ancient Roman ruins of Italica, or take a wine tasting at Quinta da Tor.
Water awareness
Just like relationships, the waters have colored flags. Rivers, lakes, and beaches have warning flags organized by color. Here are the colors and their meanings in Portugal:
- Green: Swimming is allowed and the waters are calm
- Yellow: Swimming isn’t allowed and the waters are rough
- Red: Entering the water isn’t allowed and waters are dangerous
- Checkered blue & white: Lifeguard is temporarily away
- Checked black & white: Lifeguard is temporarily away
Lagos has a plethora of beaches to enjoy. Use your vacation time, use your swimwear, and always use your common sense when abroad.
Car safety
While Lagos is generally safe, if you decide to rent a car to drive from Seville to Lagos, it's very important to keep in mind that car break-ins are not uncommon. When exiting your car, make sure nothing is visible from the window, keep important documents on you, and use secure parking facilities.
Fortunately, when you take a private car with Daytrip, you don't have to worry about this.
How to get from Seville to Lagos
So how exactly would you like to get from Seville to Lagos? Bus? Train? Rental? Biking???
There are various transportation options to cover the distance. We've outlined them below so you can decide which works best for you.
Seville to Lagos by plane
Unfortunately, Lagos doesn’t have a major airport. You’ll have to fly into Faro Airport first which is about a one-hour drive to Lago – hitting roughly 56.4 miles (90.7 km) on the road. Add in the 2 hours needed at the airport for check-in and security, and flying from Seville to Lagos ends up being slower than the bus.
Seville to Lagos by rental car
Traveling on your own time by rental car gives great flexibility. Here’s a quick reminder of what you’ll likely need to get your rental car:
- additional proof of identity
- a phone to take pictures of the rental (for your own safety)
- a valid driver's license
- a valid credit card
The drive itself is relatively straightforward. Just take the A-49 and A22 until you reach the exit for the N120 to Lagos. There are a few drawbacks though, namely navigating local roads if you decide to go sightseeing, and finding secure parking when you get to Lagos.
Seville to Lagos by bus
Bus departure times may vary as well as the estimated arrival times. The "fastest" bus takes 4 hours and 45 minutes, while other buses push closer to 6 hours to travel time. Bus tickets cost between $18-75.

Take the fastest & safest option. The car ride is about 2 hours and 47 minutes and covers 171.5 miles (276 km). Aside from door-to-door service, Daytrip offers English-speaking drivers, 24/7 support, and customizable trips.
That means you can stop whenever you want to do whatever you want. If you’d like to see the view from Castelo de Tavira, you can. If you schedule to travel back in time to see the Castelo de Silves, you will.
Once you arrive in Lagos, you won't have to worry about finding parking, or potential break-ins.
Seville to Lagos by train

Enjoyable trip with an excellent driver
“Our driver, Bruno, promptly picked us up at our hotel in Seville. He chatted with us throughout the trip, sharing information & engaging in a nice conversation. We were very comfortable in his car & upon our arrival in Lagos, he shared a bag of local oranges with us to enjoy. Would definitely recommend this services.”

Best Option for Stress Free Travel
“We used Daytrip from Seville to Lagos, and Lagos to Lisbon. Both drivers were great. Punctual, knowledgeable, friendly, and the vehicles were big, clean and comfortable. They even had WiFi. Door to door service on your schedule is so much easier than renting a car, or taking a train. No taxis needed (which is a challenge with 5 people), connecting trains, worry about getting lost or missing a train, parking, etc. We did not schedule any side trips, but still learned a great deal from our drivers. And we saved 4 hours per trip avoiding taxi/bus/train options available to us. Will definitely use again.”
“We initially thought we'd rent a car and drive from Sevilla Spain to Lagos Portugal to continue our extended trip but were shocked by the price of a one-way car rental. Looking at other options, we selected Daytrip and were very happy with the service. Our driver, Mauricio arrived 15 minutes early and even picked us up at our door - something the local taxi drivers wouldn't due to the narrow street. The ride was perfect and Mauricio was friendly and explained many things about Portugal drive. We took a stop a Huelva Spain and then continued on to Lagos where Mauricio delivered us to our apartment right on time. We'll certainly use Daytrip again if the opportunity arises in the future.”

Trip from Seville Spain to Lagos Portugal
“My wife and I used this service to get to Lagos from Seville. Much quicker than a bus and less hassle than a plane. The driver was first rate and spoke good English. The car was clean and comfortable for our trip. I would recommend highly.”
“The trip from Lagos to Seville was spectacular! Carlos was amazing and provided a safe trip for us! You definitely need to advertise your services more as I accidentally stumbled across your information. I would have definitely used you for transportation from Lisbon to Lagos instead of the bus if I new this service was available. Thank you for your five 🌟 service!”
“We were so nervous about booking this driver to take us from seville to Lagos. Nuno arrived early and took us on an amazing day tour. We stopped in Niebla to look at the castle, and our driver came in too. It was an excursion I would highly recommend. After our excursion Nuno found out my husband was a golfer. He made a special trip through Faro to show us many million dollar houses and golf courses. We had the best day and found a great way to travel. We were very impressed with the car, the driver and the overall experience. We will use this company again in the future.”
