Gurye is approximately 270 km (168 miles) from Seoul and around 100 km (62 miles) from Gwangju. From Seoul, the drive by private transfer typically takes around 3 to 3.5 hours. Two sites stand out for travelers willing to look beyond the obvious. Gurye is one of South Korea's most underrated rural escapes, and it rewards visitors who make the effort to get there. Sitting at the foot of Jirisan — Korea's second-largest national park — the county offers a rare combination of dramatic mountain scenery, living Buddhist heritage, and seasonal natural spectacles. In spring, hillsides turn golden with sansuyu cornelian cherry blossoms during one of the country's most distinctive flower festivals. In autumn, the same landscapes blaze with color. Unlike more heavily touristed destinations, Gurye still feels genuinely unhurried.
Gurye's highlights are spread across a wide area — the temple and national park entrance, the festival village, Ssangsanjae, and the juniper forest are not walkable from each other and are not well served by public transport. Getting between them without a car means long waits or backtracking.
