Overview: car trip from Puno to Cusco

Cusco is a place many tourists have on their bucket list, which is no surprise, as the city transports you back in time. While most visitors head off to the famous Machu Picchu, Cusco itself is worth exploring for its culture, ancestral roots, archaeological monuments, and fascinating nature. You will slowly discover the city’s charm as you begin your journey from Puno to Cusco.

A car trip to Cusco guarantees an unforgettable experience as you traverse the mountainous roads and breathtaking panoramic views of the snow-capped Andes unfold. The best way to discover this region of Peru between Puno and Cusco is by booking a private car service, like Daytrip, that will give you the freedom to make stops at such mesmerizing places as Chinchero, known for the rainbows that often arch over the town, Pucará located in the Andean highlands, or Raqchi archaeological site where the famous Temple of Wiracocha can be found.

About Cusco

Cusco is not only known as the cultural capital of Peru but also as the oldest continuously inhabited city in South America. The charming city is rich in history and serves as a gateway to visiting other jewels around it, such as Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain.

A brief history of Cusco

From the 13th to 16th century, located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, known as Tawantinsuyu. Manko Capaq was the founder of the Inca civilization and empire, and that is the beginning of the Cusco we know today. By the 15th century, it was the main center of culture, religion, politics, and architecture.

In 1533, the Spanish conquest occurred, and Francisco Pizarro gained control of Cusco. Unfortunately, the Spaniards destroyed many Incan buildings during the colonization, constructing their buildings on top, which is now a fusion of Incan and colonial architecture.

In 1780, an uprising against the conquistadors was led by Túpac Amaru II to protect the indigenous people who suffered through the colonization period. The event took place near Cusco and, not long after, spread throughout the whole Andean region. Although Túpac Amaru II was captured by the Spanish, it was an important step towards Latin America’s freedom. A century later, in 1821, Peru eventually gained its independence.

Today, Cusco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and keeps attracting visitors from all over the world with its charming atmosphere and deep historical roots.

From Puno to Cusco: travel tips

Here are some handy tips to “put in your bags” that will not add weight to your luggage but will only elevate your experience as you travel from Puno to Cusco.

Book your accommodation in advance

Cusco is a very popular tourist destination, so make sure you book your stay in advance! You will not only save some money but also find the best accommodation in terms of the location before anyone else.

Prepare for possible altitude sickness

If you are not from Puno and are planning to first go there and then visit Cusco, be aware that both cities are located in a high-altitude area, respectively 12,556 feet and 11,152 feet (3,827 km and 3,399 m) above sea level. You might experience altitude sickness symptoms, so it is suggested to acclimate gradually, drink plenty of water, and have lighter meals. One of the most common ways to combat altitude sickness in Peru is either by chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea.

Have some cash in your pockets

It is a good idea to bring some cash when traveling in Peru, as there are still many places that do not accept cards. Although you will most likely be able to use your card in the most touristy places, as well as at hotels and restaurants, having some Peruvian Soles on hand will make your trip more seamless and will allow you to support the local community.

How to get from Puno to Cusco

Choosing the right mode of transportation is key to a seamless Puno to Cusco transfer. Here are some of the ways that will transfer you to Cusco, according to your preferences.

From Puno to Cusco by bus

When planning your visit to Cusco, you can choose one of the bus services that operate in this area. There are both cost-effective and luxury options available:

  • Cruz del Sol: The ticket price is around $16 (60 Sol), the journey takes 7 hours, and the buses depart twice a day: at 8 AM and 10 PM.
  • 4M Express: If you book in advance, tickets cost around $14 (52 Sol), but the price can go up to $70 (262 Sol). This tourist bus company offers luxury services, including guided tours, reclining seats, snacks on board, air conditioning and heating, and even a satellite monitoring system. The journey typically takes 7 to 8 hours.

From Puno to Cusco by train

A train journey from Puno to Cusco will offer you a unique and luxurious experience. You can choose between two train options:

  • Belmond Andean Explorer: This luxury train service is popular amongst visitors, so make sure you book in advance, as it takes you on one of the most breathtaking routes in the world! Bear in mind that it departs only on Tuesdays. You will reach the destination in one day, and the cheapest tickets cost around $3,238 (12,126 Sol).
  • PeruRail Titicaca: This train service also offers a luxurious experience, although slightly less extravagant. You will reach Cusco in around 10 hours and 20 minutes, and the tickets cost around $270 (1,011 Sol).

From Puno to Cusco by private car service

Although the previous options sound quite tempting, one of the downsides is that neither the buses nor trains will make stops along the way, so you will only be able to see the mesmerizing Andes region through a window. If you want to elevate your experience and make the most out of your trip, booking a private car service, like Daytrip, might be what you are looking for.

As you approach the enchanting Cusco, your local English-speaking driver will take care of your luggage, provide insider recommendations, and ensure your comfort throughout the journey. You will reach your destination in approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes, although you will be there before the blink of an eye. The road to Cusco will take your breath away with its stunning views. Secure your seat for $111 (416 Sol).

Things to do when you get to Cusco

Cusco is a place that will take your breath away with its rich Incan heritage, stunning views, indigenous culture, and so much more. Here’s just a small portion of the things that you can experience during your stay in this captivating city.

Explore Cusco’s historical center

A walk through Cusco’s cobblestoned historical center will immerse you in the city’s fascinating history. Learn more about the ancient Inca and colonial streets, which unveil a part of its story with each step. Some of the must-see places are the San Blas neighborhood, filled with art galleries, El Coricancha, known as the most important Incan temple, and Cusco’s Cathedral, which has deep historical significance.

Admire the city of Incas from above

Your Cusco itinerary has to include a panoramic view of the city. Some of the best viewpoints in charming Cusco are Mirador de San Cristobal, Palacio Manco Capac, and Arco de Santa Ana. Each one will surprise you with a different view of the city, so make sure you visit more than one!

Enjoy the local cuisine

Peru is famous for having one of the most delicious cuisines in the world, and the traditional food of Cusco will not disappoint. Here are some of the local delicacies that you must try while in Cusco:

  • Chiri Uchu: In Quechua, it means ‘cold chili,’ and it explains the essence of this delicacy. It consists of meat (such as guinea pig and chicken), boiled potatoes, rocoto peppers, and roasted corn.
  • Chairo: A traditional Andean soup with the main ingredients being meat (lamb or beef), chuño, peas, carrots, oregano, mint, and lima beans.
  • Roasted cuy or guinea pig: Although it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, guinea pig’s meat is considered a delicacy in Cusco and other highlands of Peru.

Take a tour of Cusco’s surroundings

While Cusco is worth a few days' stay, you can extend your trip by adding other bucket-list-worthy landmarks. Although you are probably already considering visiting Machu Picchu and the Rainbow Mountain, ensure that you book the tours in advance. Other places worth visiting are Moray and Salt Mines of Maras, the ancient ruins of Choquequirao, and the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

When is the best time to visit Cusco

Although visiting Cusco is never a bad idea, the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from mid-April to the end of November. With so many outdoor activities, such as visiting Machu Picchu, it is recommended to avoid any rain that could ruin the experience. During the dry season, the temperature ranges from 64°F to 68°F (18°C-20°C). Keep in mind that at night, the temperature can drop significantly to just 32°F (0°C).

If you plan your visit in the wet season, which is from November to April, be prepared for slightly warmer temperatures, around 66°F to 70°F (19°C-21°C), but expect heavy rain from December to March.

It was a fantastic trip.

We were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, we’d especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation

Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.

Daytrip never disappoints

We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.

Great way to travel and see some sights on the way

We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.

Excellent service

We used the service twice while in Thailand. Extremely prompt and efficient customer service. Best rate being offered in Chiang Mai for the travels. Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.
