Overview: car trip from Stockholm to Copenhagen

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is situated on two islands, Amager and Zealand, making the latter the most populated island in the country. This modern Scandinavian city is like a box full of surprises, and as you explore, you'll feel like unwrapping layer after layer of a beautifully wrapped gift.

Make sure you buckle up tightly, as your Danish dream vacation is about to begin. While the journey from Stockholm to Copenhagen covers quite some distance, it's undoubtedly worth every mile!

With a private car service like Daytrip, getting from Stockholm to Copenhagen will feel like a breeze. Before you dive into the surprises Copenhagen has prepared for you, make sure you add sightseeing stops to your trip. If you are eager to learn something new and have kids along with you, visit the Tom Tits Experiment science center in Sweden. If you are drawn to nature, take a moment to breathe in the calming waterfall scene at the village of Rottle.

About Copenhagen

When you think of Copenhagen, the iconic image of colorful houses reflecting in the canal of Nyhavn likely springs to your mind first. Once a commercial port, Nyhavn has become one of Copenhagen's most emblematic spots, which can now be seen on countless postcards.

As you walk through this scenic district, try to spot house number 20. It holds a special meaning, as that’s where the beloved Danish fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen lived and wrote some of his first stories. Andersen actually lived in three houses within Nyhavn, but number 20 was where he lived the longest.

Speaking of Andersen, one of his characters has been immortalized as a statue: the Little Mermaid, perhaps familiar to you through Disney's animated film adaptation. Although visitors often are not as impressed upon seeing the statue in real life, over the years, it has become a symbol of Copenhagen and deserves to be appreciated for its cultural significance.

Denmark is known as one of the happiest countries in the world, closely followed by Finland. This is not surprising, considering that Tivoli Gardens inspired Disney, and LEGO was invented in Denmark! On a more serious note, the ranking of the happiest country takes into account factors such as education, healthcare, low crime rate, and freedom.

Being one of the happiest countries in the world may also be connected to the Danish lifestyle which is known as hygge. This concept encompasses a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, enjoying the little things and sharing moments with your loved ones.

Candles play a significant role in the *hygge *lifestyle. It is estimated that, on average, every Dane burns around 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg) of candles per year, so expect Copenhagen's restaurants and cafes to be adorned with glowing candles and fairy lights, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. If you are longing for a slowed-down pace, Copenhagen is the ideal destination for your Scandinavian trip.

From Stockholm to Copenhagen: travel tips

Ensure your trip from Stockholm to Copenhagen is as cozy as the Danish lifestyle, so bear in mind these handy tips:

Be aware of the high prices

When visiting Copenhagen, be prepared to spend more than average. It ranks among the top 10 most expensive cities in the world, alongside places like Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Zurich, and New York. While high prices cannot be avoided, you can reduce some costs by booking your accommodation well in advance, ideally 3 to 6 months before your visit.

Consider purchasing the Copenhagen Card

If you are planning to give public transport a good use and visit the main attractions, consider getting the Copenhagen Card, which includes unlimited rides and even free entrance to the top attractions. You can choose either the Discover or Hop card, which differ in price and the amount of access they provide to attractions and transportation options throughout the city.

How to get from Stockholm to Copenhagen

Now that you know some tips on how to save during your trip, it’s time to figure out which is the best Stockholm to Copenhagen transfer option for you. Here are the three main ways to reach Copenhagen:

From Stockholm to Copenhagen by bus

Traveling by bus from Stockholm to Copenhagen is an affordable option, though it does come with a travel time of approximately 9 to 10 hours. Flixbus offers cheap tickets starting from around $36 (€33).

From Stockholm to Copenhagen by train

A quicker way to get from Stockholm to Copenhagen is by high-speed train. One of the main service providers is SJ, with the cheapest tickets starting at around $45 (€41.50). Keep in mind that these affordable fares are for 2nd class trains departing early in the morning (5:20 AM) or late at night (11:10 PM). These trains travel at a speed of up to 124 mi/h (200 km/h), so you will reach Stockholm in about 5 hours.

From Stockholm to Copenhagen by plane

If you are planning to fly from Stockholm to Copenhagen, you can get some quite cheap flight deals on the Norwegian Airlines website. The cheapest tickets during sales start from $50 (€47), but it’s worth noting that these tickets don’t include a carry-on bag.

While the flight takes just 1 hour and 10 minutes, you also have to factor in the wait time at the airport (2 hours) and commuting to and from the airport. As flights often have delays, you might have to spend more time at the airport than expected. So, in total, it can take you around 4 hours to reach your destination.

From Stockholm to Copenhagen by cruise

For a more luxurious experience, you can opt for a cruise to travel from Stockholm to Copenhagen. The cruises between these cities navigate through the Baltic Sea, making stops at several ports on the way. The length and prices of these cruises vary, so make sure you do some research to find what best suits your preferences.

From Stockholm to Copenhagen by private car service

This option is for the comfort-seekers. A private car service like Daytrip offers comfort as you travel in a spacious, air-conditioned vehicle, along with flexibility, which no other transportation options offer. Your driver will not only make stops at your chosen sights but also share some of the best tips only locals know. Without adding any stops, the drive takes around 7 hours.

As you are booking your trip with Daytrip, you can add any sightseeing stops to your journey from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Would you like to explore Sweden’s best-preserved Renaissance castle? Then add Vadstena Castle to your itinerary! If you want to soak in some medieval charm before reaching modern Copenhagen, make sure you have Karnan Tower or Lund, one of Sweden’s oldest cities, on your list. Getting to your destination is now smoother than ever!

Things to do when you get to Copenhagen

Now that your journey from Stockholm to Copenhagen is over, it is finally time to stretch your legs and explore the modern Nordic city. Here are some of our recommendations that are a must:

Have fun at the Tivoli Gardens

Did you know that Copenhagen is home to the world's second-oldest amusement park? It is also the place that inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland. Opened in 1843, the Tivoli Gardens have been welcoming travelers and locals ever since. This magical park gets transformed four times a year for summer, Halloween, Christmas, and Easter, so make sure to visit during your favorite period! Since the park undergoes preparation between each period, be sure to check their website for opening hours before planning your visit.

It is one of the main attractions in Copenhagen, but if you get the Copenhagen Card, you won’t have to pay any additional fees to enter the Tivoli Gardens. We assure you that you won’t be disappointed!

Explore the Freetown Christiania

Christiania is probably one of the most unique places you will ever visit. It is a self-governing town within Copenhagen created in 1971 by activists to form a free community in an abandoned military base. The locals of Christiania are known for their openness towards drugs and liberal philosophy emphasizing artistic expression and alternative lifestyles. They even have their own laws, flag, and currency (LΓΈn).

The area of Christiania is also unique for its street art, but be careful when taking photos, as some parts of it are prohibited. Pusher Street is one of the most famous ones in Christiania since, until recently, it was the main place for selling cannabis. There were also special rules on this street: you could not run and take photos.

Admire the Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace is a must when visiting Copenhagen. It's steeped in centuries-long history, as it was the residence of the Danish monarchy until 1794. Nowadays, it is one of the most visited sites in the capital of Denmark. The palace also has the tallest tower in Copenhagen, which you can access for free. You can admire the artwork, stroll through the royal reception rooms and kitchen, and explore the ruins of the previous castles.

Get a taste of the Danish cuisine

Copenhagen is home to the restaurant Noma, which was considered the best in the world for many years. Denmark takes gastronomy seriously. While Copenhagen is far from being cheap, you should definitely try some of its typical dishes (no need to visit Michelin-star restaurants). Here are three of our favorite ones:

  • SmΓΈrrebrΓΈd: you have not been to Copenhagen if you have not tried these open-faced sandwiches. They are made of rye bread with different kinds of toppings, such as beef, smoked salmon, eggs, herring, and shrimp.
  • Frikadeller: one of the most famous Danish dishes. It consists of minced pork meatballs, eggs, onion, and flour. *Frikadeller *is usually accompanied by sauce, boiled potatoes, and red cabbage.
  • Gravad laks: salmon is an important part of Danish gastronomy. This dish is made of marinated salmon, seasoned with dills and sweet mustard.

When is the best time to visit Copenhagen

To make the most out of Copenhagen, it is recommended to visit between March and August. However, remember that the weather can be unpredictable during the spring months (from March to May), and rain may ruin your outdoor plans.

If you're not concerned about rain or cold weather, visiting during the off-season is a great idea, as prices are generally lower. The off-season in Copenhagen is from January to March, but during this time, many attractions tend to close earlier. Therefore, if you plan to travel during this period, make sure to plan your itinerary accordingly.

It was a fantastic trip.

β€œWe were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, we’d especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.”

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation

β€œGonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.”

Daytrip never disappoints

β€œWe were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.”

Great way to travel and see some sights on the way

β€œWe did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.”
