Overview: car trip from Rome to Montepulciano

Whether it's a vibrant capital city or a quaint hilltop village, Italy houses a collection of bucket-list experiences. The drive from Rome to Montepulciano is one of them, and it hides dozens more along its 110-mile, picture-perfect road.

Your journey begins with Rome's rustic Roman ruins fading into vibrant greenery. The deeper you venture into Lazio's countryside, the more the hills rise above the horizon, and evidence of the nation's mouthwatering food scene becomes even more visible.

Wild rosemary needle-like plants line the sprawling olive growths, and traditional farmyards appear in the distance as you approach the Tuscany frontier. The beating Tuscan sun hovering over cypress tree-lined roads soaring toward the sky provides the perfect backdrop for the final hurdle of your scenic tour to Montepulciano.

Stopping at the roadside, recharging with an espresso, or refreshing in the fragrant country breeze will transform this road trip into an unforgettable experience. To ensure you know which mode of transport can do so and enhance your Italian escape, we created an extensive guide to traveling from Rome to Montepulciano below!

About Montepulciano

You're transporting yourself from busy city life to a laidback rural atmosphere after traveling from Rome to Montepulciano. This small town has a population of under 14,000 and stretches only 64 square miles upon a limestone ridge.

Most Italians recognize this little village for its top-class wine production. Its climate and location in the southern Tuscan hills, 77 miles from Florence, are vital reasons for Montepulicano's sought-after food and drink scene.

Early Montepulciano

Tribes have inhabited the hill of Montepulciano since the 4th century BC. However, the Roman Empire was the first to build a permanent settlement. Montepulciano became a strategic military post where troops would guard the main roads connecting the north to the southern tips of the peninsula.

Siena and Florence fought for Montepulciano's land due to its influential location. As a result, the locals fortified the town in 1511. Many historic and notable buildings were erected during this period, attracting scholars like Bartolomeo Aragazzi. Montepulciano's beautifully crafted old town has remained relatively the same since its golden age of the Renaissance.

Modern Montepulciano

Today, Montepulciano is a blast from the past. Its historic quarters, stuck in a time warp, attract visitors from around the globe. Uneven, bricked piazzas, rustic architecture, and traditional cafes seemingly untouched by the 21st century come together to create one of Italy's finest medieval villages.

However, most people recognize Montepulciano for its complex red wines. As you climb Palazzo Comunale's 67 steps, lush vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see. Wine is so famous here that the city still hosts Bravio delle Botti. Since the 14th century, locals have hurled empty wine barrels up its ancient walkways to Cathedral Square as fast as possible to be crowned champion!

From Rome to Montepulciano: travel tips

Many headaches can spoil your adventure unless you regularly travel from Rome to Montepulciano. Luckily, our local drivers and travel experts want to share tips to help overcome any issues en route!

Consider the time

Rome is Europe's fifth-most traffic-congested city. If you don't want to waste your valuable vacation time stuck in a car, travel outside the rush hour periods from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Also, try to leave as early as possible after 9:00 AM. Several sightseeing opportunities en route may be closed if you set off too late.

Explore other hilltop towns

Hilltop towns are a tourist symbol of Italy. Their postcard-like streets and laid-back atmosphere are hard to come by in the 21st century.

Luckily, the drive from Rome to Montepulciano has some of the finest medical villages nationwide. Orvieto rises 1,000 feet above sea level and was once a papel-safe zone. Civita di Bagnoregio dates back to the 7th century, and you can access it by pedestrian bridge today!

Pack wisely

The last thing you want is to carry heavy luggage while exploring the gorgeous hilltop towns on your trip from Rome to Montepulciano. Cobbled lanes make up almost every walkway, meaning you should pack light and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Finally, consider the season when packing. In the summer, the temperature can reach up to 80° Fahrenheit. Therefore, sunscreen and sun hats are vital. But temperatures plummet in the winter, so don't forget warm clothing and an umbrella!

Things to do when you get to Montepulciano

You'll be surprised at how many things there are to see and do after your Rome to Montepulciano transfer. Despite this little city's size, you'll have a full travel entry on a weekend adventure!

Immerse yourself in the Museo Civico

For art enthusiasts, the Museo Civico offers a rich collection of works from the medieval and Renaissance periods. Housed in the historic Palazzo Neri Orselli, the gallery features artworks, historical artifacts, and exhibits that delve into the region's history.

Notable pieces include paintings by local artists and artifacts related to the town's history. This gives a comprehensive overview of Montepulciano's artistic and cultural heritage.

Indulge in fine wines

Visiting Montepulciano and not sampling fine wines is like going to Rome and not witnessing the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Colosseum. Therefore, visiting these world-renowned vineyards should be your primary focus.

Cantina de' Ricci is arguably the most sought-after, showcasing regional wines through tastings in underground vaulted ceilings. But if you want a more relaxing experience, head to almost any bar in town and ask the bartender for the best-fermented grape juice the area offers!

Venture down to San Biago

The Church of San Biagio is an architectural gem, just outside the town walls. Designed by Antonio da Sangallo in the early 16th century, this Renaissance church is known for its harmonious proportions and beautiful stone exterior, which glows warmly in the Tuscan sun.

The church's serene setting, nestled in rolling vineyards and olive groves, provides a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll. Remember, it's still a place of worship today, so please remain respectful inside its grounds.

Wander through Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande might not be as grand as other squares in Italy. However, few can match the raw beauty inside its four sides, which are lined with stunning Renaissance architecture.

The square is the city's heart and soul, where you can soak up the laid-back atmosphere and admire elegant buildings, including the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption. It has one of the world's largest projected screens, where up to 8,000 locals and visitors can appreciate the Locarno Film Festival in August.

When is the best time to visit Montepulciano?

Due to the Mediterranean climate, the warmer months of the year are the best time to book your Rome to Montepulciano transfer. However, summer is the peak tourist season, and due to Montepliciano's narrow lanes, the city can feel crowded even with a handful of groups around.

Therefore, traveling in the spring or autumn is the best time to explore Montepulciano. The lower temperatures make exploring the historical quarter during the day or enjoying a coffee on the terrace more pleasant. Booking accommodation or traveling via public transport is also easier when you're one of the only tourists in town.

Finally, you'll contribute to sustainable travel when visiting from April to May and September to October. You'll support businesses year-round, so locals won't need to rely on a busy summer season!

It was a fantastic trip.

We were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, we’d especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation

Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.

Daytrip never disappoints

We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.

Great way to travel and see some sights on the way

We did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.

Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.
